Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818886 The Glory of the Games Olympics Immortalized forever in the film Cool Runnings, the Jamaican bobsled team debuted in the 1988 Calgary Games. The crew from the Carribean has become a part of Olympic lore, to be sure, but could it crack our list of most memorable moments from the Winter Games? Click through to find out.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818816 Miracle on Ice Olympics Set against the backdrop of the Cold War, the United States took on the heavily favored Soviet Union team in men's ice hockey in 1980. It wasn't supposed to be close. The Americans were just kids, amateurs in the truest sense of the word. The Soviets were men, having gone 5-3-1 against NHL teams in exhibition play that year. But Herb Brooks' boys weren't scared. Despite falling behind early, and being down 3-2 at the end of the 2nd period, the U.S. team stunned their Soviet opponents 4-3 in one of the most shocking upsets in sports history. As the final seconds ticked down, broadcaster Al Michaels delivered possibly the most famous call ever for a sporting event: "Do you believe in miracles? YES!"

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818882 Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding saga Olympics This one would certainly top any list of most bizarre Olympic moments. On January 6, 1994, figure skater Nancy Kerrigan (below at left) was hit in the knee when an attacker swung a metal baton at her at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The attack, it turned out, had been orchestrated by the ex-husband of rival figure skater Tonya Harding (below at right). Kerrigan was able to skate by the time the '94 Lillehammer Games came around, and finished 2nd behind Russian skater Oksana Baiul. Harding, who was, unbelievably, allowed to participate in the Olympics, finished well back after falling during her routine.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818817 Dan Jansen finally wins gold Olympics Dan Jansen was already the best speed skater in the world in 1988. He was the favorite in both the 500 and 1,000-meter races. Hours before the race, however, he received the tragic news that his sister Jane had died of Leukemia. The two were extremely close. Jansen competed in each race, but fell in both, leaving Calgary without a medal. Four years later in Albertville, Jansen again entered as the favorite in both races. Once again, he came up empty. In 1994, Jansen knew Lillehammer was his last shot at Olympic gold. He had set the world record in the 500 in the years between Albertville and Lillehammer, but finished 8th in that race. In the 1,000 meters, his last chance for Olympic glory, Jansen finally won. He took a victory lap with his young daughter named, appropriately, Jane.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818819 Klammer goes all out Olympics Franz Klammer was a hero in Austria. A winner of 8 of 9 World Cup downhill races in 1975, Klammer entered the '76 Innsbruck Olympics as the prohibitive favorite. Klammer was the last of the favorites to race, and defending Olympic champion Bernhard Russi had put up a time that no one could match. The course was icy and treacherous. Up steps the 22-year-old Klammer. With little regard for his own safety, Klammer flew down the hill, seemingly on the edge of disaster at every turn. The result? A blistering run that left him .33 seconds ahead of Russi and the Olympic gold medalist.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818884 Heiden makes history at Lake Placid Olympics Eric Heiden is the best all-around speed skater in history. Any arguments to the contrary are foolish. Not sure? Check this out. At the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics, Heiden won gold in all five men's races, from the sprints to the distance. He finished first in the 500-, 1000-, 1,500-, 5,000- and 10,000-meter races. He set four Olympic records, including one world record. Not only is he the only skater to ever win all five races in a single Olympics, he's the only skater to ever win all five events in any Olympics.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818818 Hermann-ator overcomes huge crash Olympics Universally regarded as one of the best alpine ski racers in history, Hermann Maier nearly lost his chance at gold -- and much more -- in Nagano. Maier had an epic crash during the downhill race in Nagano at the '98 Games. For everyone watching, it was a miracle he was able to get up at all. Remarkably, just days later, Maier was back on the hill, winning gold in both the giant slalom and Super-G.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818885 Perfection on the ice Olympics If ice dancing is on this list, you know it had to be spectacular. And that's exactly what Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean were. The British pair gave a performance for the ages at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. They did not begin skating for the first 18 seconds of the music so as not to exceed the time limit for a routine. Their starting pose on the ice became the defining image of the Sarajevo games. In the end, Torvill and Dean received 12 perfect 6.0s for their free skate routine, including a 6.0 from every judge in the artistic impression category.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10819000 Controversy hits pairs figure skating Olympics Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada (left) were noticably upset after winning silver at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. With good reason. After placing second in the short program behind their Russian rivals, Sale and Pelletier delivered a flawless performance in the long program while the Russians had a minor, yet notable slip-up. Unbelievably, five judges still gave the gold to Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. The crowd cried foul. The broadcasters didn't understand it either. After the competition, the French judge admitted she had been coerced into voting for the Russians. As a result, Sale and Pelletier were eventually awarded gold medals as well, and the two pairs shared the Olympic title.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818883 Bonnie the Great Olympics Bonnie Blair embodied everything an Olympian should: humility, sportsmanship and excellence. From 1988-94, Blair owned the sprints in speedskating. She won gold in the 500 and bronze in the 1,000 in Calgary in '88. She then swept both races at the '92 Albertville Games and then again in Lillehammer in '94. She was named ABC's Wide World of Sports Athlete of the Year in '92 and was named Female Athlete of the Year by The Associated Press in '94.

Olympics 235 43 Top 10 moments in Winter Olympics history 10818887 Battle of the Brians Olympics Male figure skaters usually take a back seat to their female counterparts. Not in 1988. In what became known as The Battle of the Brians, American Brian Boitano (pictured) and Canadian Brian Orser, world champions both, collided on the ice. Essentially tied entering the free skate, Boitano landed eight triple jumps, including two triple Axels, and a triple-triple combination. Orser omitted the second planned triple axel in his routine. The judges, by a razor-thin margin, gave the gold to Boitano.
