So, we already know Michael Phelps won't be returning to Rio to compete in the 2016 Summer Games. But there are plenty of athletes to cheer on in four years when the Olympics hit South America. Take a look at these athletes to watch:

The three American women – ages 16, 16 and 18 – who won individual medals have all mentioned they want to stick around the gymnastics scene through the Rio Games. Women’s gymnastics is a notoriously difficult sport to stick around for more than one Olympics, but with the American women winning team gold, the public – not to mention NBC – would love to have some of the team back for 2016. Or all five.

Morgan saw her star turn in the 2011 World Cup, but coming into the 2012 Games the 23-year-old wasn’t the face of the team. The face of the team would be Hope Solo, or Abby Wambach, or Megan Rapinoe. In 2016 the U.S. women will try for their fifth gold medal in the six Olympics that’s featured women’s soccer. (The U.S. team won silver in 2000.) By then Morgan will be a veteran of one Olympiad and two World Cups, and she should be the face of the sport.

What’s it like to be second-best for your entire career? That’s what Ryan Lochte has experienced with a career spent in the shadow of Michael Phelps. Lochte’s career hasn’t been too shabby: 11 medals, including two golds, two silvers and a bronze in London. Sure, he’d predicted London was going to be his Olympics. It was still Phelps’ Olympics, where he became the most-medaled Olympian ever. But in 2016, when Lochte will be 31, he’ll have another chance to get out of Phelps’ shadow.

He’s not an American; why is he on this list? Because his teammate, the all-world-everything superfreak Usain Bolt, is as worshipped in America as any U.S. star. But come 2016, Bolt will have four more years on his frame, and Blake – who is only 22, and who finished second to Bolt in the 100- and 200-meter dash in London – will be reaching his prime. Bonus: Blake has said he wants to do the triple jump in 2016.

The 17-year-old Franklin was billed as the future of U.S. swimming ahead of the London Games, and she delivered. She swam in seven events, a record for U.S. women, medaled in five (four of which were gold), and set two world records. She idolizes Michael Phelps and wants to chase his medal record. Two weeks ago that might have been a ridiculous goal. It’s not anymore.

Hooker became the face of the U.S. women’s volleyball team in London, where the Americans took silver for the second Olympics in a row. She’s only 24, so expect her to return for another shot at that elusive gold.

2012 was the swan song for the greatest beach volleyball duo in history, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh. Misty and Kerri won their third Olympic gold medal in a row, beating first-time American Olympians April Ross and Jennifer Kessy. But May-Treanor retired after the gold medal match, and Kessy has said London will be her one and only Olympics. Which means both Ross and Walsh – 30 and 33, respectively – will be looking for playing partners in four years. How about a Walsh-Ross ticket in 2016?

The man who wins the Olympic decathlon gets the title of greatest (and most well-rounded) athlete on earth. That’s what the 24-year-old Eaton did in London in the two-day track and field event. Eaton’s young enough that he’ll still be peaking in 2016. Fellow American decathlete Trey Hardee, who won silver, is four years older than Eaton.

He called it. The 24-year-old tweeted the night before he wrestled for the first time in an Olympics that the next tweet he sent would be a picture of him with a gold medal. It was. And Burroughs has pledged that he’s going to stick with the sport through the Rio Olympics before moving to the more lucrative mixed martial arts. (The $250,000 gold medal bonus ought to help.)

The United States has never medaled in table tennis, one of three events in the Summer Olympics where that’s true. Hsing aims to change that. At 16, the Californian surprised many in London, finishing 17th in the individual competition. In a sport dominated by Asian nations, American table tennis enthusiasts hope that 2016 – or 2020 – will change that. Hsing will be at the top of the list.

The No. 1 ranked archer in the world shined during the team event, when the U.S. just missed out on gold with a heart-stopping loss to Italy that garnered silver for the U.S. But he struggled in the individual competition, finishing 17th. The country boy is only 23, so has plenty of time to get revenge in 2016 and beyond.

The youngest member of the 2012 USA hoops team was Anthony Davis, who was a freshman at the University of Kentucky just a few months ago before he went to the pros and was drafted number one. He’s supposed to be a sure-thing NBA superstar. But drafted right behind him is another huge talent in the fellow Kentucky hoopster Kidd-Gilchrist. Maybe the next time the two will be teammates is 2016 in Rio, joining veterans like Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook? And who knows? Maybe Rick Pitino will take the reins and be the Team USA/Kentucky coach in Rio.

The 15-year-old Ledecky finished her freshman year of high school in spring, then traveled to London in summer. Not a bad gig if you can get it. In London, where she was the youngest member of the 529-athlete U.S. Olympic team – one of just a few 15-year-old Olympians from any country – she tore it up. She won gold in the 800-meter freestyle and nearly broke the world record. She also set the American record, which had been held by someone named Janet Evans. This kid’s future is bright.

It was one of the most inspiring American stories of the London Games: Kayla Harrison, whose childhood judo coach had been jailed for sexually abusing her, won the gold medal she’d aspired to. But little was made of the fact that America’s first gold medalist in judo was only 22 years old. Harrison has plenty more judo left in her, which is the best thing the American judo scene could ask for.

Much has been made of the moribund state of American boxing. The USA won one gold in Athens in 2004, zero golds in Beijing in 2008, and were shut out of all medals in London. At least, the men were shut out. In the first time women have boxed in the Olympics, 17-year-old Claressa Shields won gold, the youngest boxer to win an Olympic gold medal since 1924.

The First Family of American Taekwondo had a rough London Games that was punctuated by injuries. Steven, a two-time gold medalist, hurt his ankle in training two weeks before the Games. He could barely walk and was knocked out in his first bout. Diana, who won bronze in 2008, lost her second match after tweaking her already hurt knee days before her competition. But the deadly brother-sister combination has already said they’ll plan to be in Rio in 2016, even though Steven will be 37 and Diana will be 32.

You can’t make it any tighter than Adrian made his 100-meter freestyle gold medal in London. He won gold by one-hundredth of a second, the slimmest margin possible. As Phelps leaves the swimming world, the 23-year-old Adrian could find himself with a much higher profile going into 2016.

Might we have a male version of Kim Rhode on our hands? Hancock was 19 when he won a skeet shooting gold in Beijing. He won again in London. The Army sergeant will be 27 when Rio rolls around, and ready to add to his golden haul.

Wait – a golfer in the Olympics? This can’t be right. Except that in 2016 it will be, as golf will make its Olympic debut. The 27-year-old Simpson is currently the highest-ranked American golfer (fifth in the world) not named Tiger Woods. Simpson’s game will only improve and mature before Rio.

The American triathlete finished a surprising fourth in London, coming in at exactly two hours. Groff’s time was merely 12 seconds behind gold. She’s the same age as Nicola Spirig of Switzerland, who won gold, and Groff will only be 34 in Rio.

The American skeet shooter might just keep coming to the Olympics until she’s reached Medicare age. She was 17 when she won gold in her first Olympics in 1996. In London, winning gold in skeet shooting, the 33-year-old Rhode – who co-hosts a hunting show on the Outdoor Channel – set an American record for medaling in five straight Olympics. She plans to make it six straight in Rio.
