As if excelling in these diverse events wasn't enough, competitors have to compete in all five of these events in one day -- a change that was adopted beginning at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. The men's event will be held Aug. 11 followed by the women's pentathlon on Aug. 12.

The first modern Olympic pentathlon was held at the 1912 Games in Stockholm, Sweden, making this the 100th anniversary of the event at the Olympics.

And just what kind of person competes in the pentathlon? Before he became a U.S. general, George S. Patton participated in the first modern pentathlon in the 1912 Olympic Games.

Modern Pentathlon 1337195 43 Modern Pentathlon sports 30884917 Shooting Shooting Modern Pentathlon The pistol shooting event involves athletes shooting an air pistol while standing 10 meters from a stationary target -- at least in years past. This year, the pistol will use a laser instead of an actual projectile to simulate shooting. Another change this year will see athletes shooting in between sections of running -- the two events were separate in past Olympics. Athletes who have the best showing in the previous events combined will get a head start over their competition as a reward for their performance. Rather than competing with a horse they are familiar with, athletes get paired with a horse in a draw only 20 minutes before the start of competition. It was recently changed as part of the competition -- up until 2000, athletes had to swim 300 meters. The first event of the pentathlon is fencing and is the only event in which athletes go head-to-head in competition. Each athlete has to face every other competitor in a match where a hit is an instant win. If neither Olympian gets a hit during the one-minute competition, both athletes lose the match.

The modern pentathlon's five events have changed but were once again chosen for the skills a soldier would most likely need -- if that soldier was a member of the calvary in the 19th century.
