Trying to win a third consecutive beach volleyball Olympic gold medal with Misty-May Treanor, Walsh arrives in London trying to add yet another milestone achievement to a career full of them while cementing her legacy as the queen of the sand. The pair were ranked third in the world as of June 12 after failing to reach the quarterfinals in two of their first four events in 2012, but they regrouped for their 39th FIVB title in Switzerland in July. Like May-Treanor, this will be Walsh’s fourth Olympic appearance, but she was a member of the U.S. indoor volleyball team that placed fourth in Sydney in 2000. Walsh, though, missed time during that tournament due to a false positive on a drug test and was cleared to play after a second test was negative. While winning the gold in Beijing was expected, Walsh showed an impressive amount of grit to play after undergoing rotator cuff surgery in 2007. Along with May-Treanor, the dynamic duo have put together staggering win streaks on the FIVB Tour, going 39-0 in 2003 and winning seven straight tournaments from 2003-04 and a record 10-tournament run in 2007-08 that was capped in Beijing. The two authored a record 112-match win streak before losing to compatriots Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs at the AVP Shootout in Cincinnati in 2008. Walsh and May-Treanor were six-time AVP Team of the Year winners, with Walsh winning MVP honors in 2003 and 2004. In the FIVB, she was named Best Blocker from 2005-08, Best Hitter from 2005-07, Most Outstanding in 2007 and Sportsperson from 2005-08.
