Franklin is a Colorado native who attends high school in Aurora, the location of the tragic mass shooting at a movie theater in July. "It's such a terrible thing, and I'm so shaken by it," Franklin said. "They're in my thoughts this entire process." She has dedicated her Olympic performances to her grieving home state, and those races have certainly given Colorado something to feel good about during a difficult time. They've also made the 17-year-old Franklin one of the rising American stars in London after she won gold in the 100-meter backstroke, setting an American record of 58.33 seconds, then took another title in the 200 backstroke in a world-record time of 2:04.06. "I can't believe what just happened," Franklin said. "... I could never dream for it to happen like that.'' She also helped the U.S. win gold in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay and the 4x100 medley relay, and bronze in the 4x100 free relay. Franklin's London showing has hardly been surprising after she won three golds at last year's world championships, including one in the 200 back. The 6-foot-1 Franklin, who has size 13 feet, holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Canada, where both of her parents hail from.
