India’s badminton star Saina Nehwal is one of India’s foremost sportswomen. The top-most ranked Indian women in the history of the sport, she is the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament and the first Indian woman to reach the Singles quarterfinals at the Olympics. Nehwal was born in Haryana but spent all her life in Hyderabad. At the age of 19, she burst onto the national scene winning the National Championships. In 2006, she emerged on the international scene when she became the first Indian woman to win a 4 star tournament, the Philippines Open. In the same year, she finished second in the BWF Junior Championships. Her excellent run continued when she became the first Indian woman to reach the quarterfinal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2008, she also won the Yonex Chinese Taipei and finished runner-up in the World Super Series. She was named the ‘Most Promising Player’ in 2008 by the Badminton World Federation. In 2009, she became the first Indian to win a BWF Super Series tournament, the most noticeable being the Indonesian Open. In 2010, at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, she became the first Indian to win a medal in Badminton. In the same year, Nehwal also won her second Super Series Title by winning the Singapore Open. She then went on to complete her hat-trick by winning the Indonesian Open. Subsequently, she won the Hong Kong Super Series after which she reached her career high ranking of No. 2. After having a poor 2011 season, she became the first Indian to reach the finals of the year-ending Super Series. In 2011, she won the Swiss Open and returned to defend it in 2012. She has been awarded the Arjuna Award in 2009; while in 2010, she received the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna by the Government of India. Her exploits make Saina Nehwal one of India's brightest prospects for an Olympic medal at the 2012 London Games.
