CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
Sandeep Singh plays in the full back position and, along with Sardara Singh, forms the backbone of the Indian national hockey team. He is a penalty corner specialist and is considered as one of the best drag-flickers in the world. Hailing from Shahabad town in Kurukshetra, Haryana, he is an employee of the police force and holds the position of a Deputy Superintendent Police Officer. Singh made his debut for the national side in 2004 at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Kuala Lumpur. In 2006, he was critically injured after being hit by an accidental gunshot in a train. Two years later, he made a full recovery and a comeback to the sport he loves. In 2007, he helped India clinch the bronze medal at the Men's Hockey Champions Challenge. In 2009, he took over the captaincy of the national side and under his captaincy the side looked to flourish as they won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup for the first time in 13 years wherein he was the top scorer of the tournament. He led the team to a second place finish at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2012, he helped India secure qualification for the 2012 London Olympics where he ended up as the top scorer of the tournament. Following this feat, he helped India win the bronze at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. His performances especially in penalty corners at these games will be crucial if India is to stand a chance of winning an Olympic medal.
