At the young age of 26, Vijay Kumar is already considered to be one of India's best pistol shooters. He has justified this tag to quite an extent with his consistent performances in the international arena. The Arjuna Award winner announced himself on the world stage at the 2006 Commonwealth Games at Melbourne when he captured the gold in both the individual and pairs events of the 25m Rapid Pistol competition. He followed it up with a bronze at the Asian Games. The following year, he won a silver medal at the Asian Championships in the 25m Center-Fire Pistol event. His most important victory came at the 2009 ISSF World Cup in Beijing in the Rapid Fire Pistol, where he came second missing out on the gold by only 0.1 point. This youngster impressed with his showing in the 2010 Commonwealth Shooting Championship where he won four gold medals and one silver. He also won three gold medals and one silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi. His feat was even more impressive as he won in all four events he participated in. Kumar continued his good form in the Asian Games where he won two bronze medals. He has been a consistent performer at the international level and this has earned him a place in the world's Top 10 shooters. He lived up to his reputation of being the India's best pistol shooters by finishing runner-up at the 2011 ISSF World Cup in the USA and with that, he sealed his ticket to the 2012 London Olympics.
