As Olympics come to a close, questions remain

BEIJING - One strange thing about the Olympics is that they remove any sense of a life outside the Olympics. They are like a casino. You wander from game to game and do things you would never otherwise do. Sportswriters who wear ties to preseason NFL games wear shorts and sandals at the Olympics. They wear their media credentials when they go out to dinner. It's a strange world.

So it was that I found myself in press seating last Saturday night, beer in hand, getting ready for the men's 100-meter dash final. I was not writing. I was not there as a fan. I was there to observe.

Less than 9.7 seconds after the starter's gun went off, I was on my feet — beer still in hand, of course — with my mouth open. I was not cheering. I was not just observing, either. I was in awe of Usain Bolt.

Earlier in the day, I had watched Michael Phelps win the 100-meter butterfly by the length of an inchworm's eyelash.

In less than 62 seconds of competition, I had seen the stories of these Olympic Games. Two incomparable athletes, one in the pool and one on the track, performed in a way that was hard to believe.

Those were these Olympics. In the end, what did you believe?

Was the real China the country of a hundred thousand young volunteers eager to help? Or was it the country that stamps out dissent and has played a key role in the carnage in Darfur? Or was it both?

Did you think that beautiful little girl was actually singing in the Opening Ceremonies? Sorry! That was lip-synched by another little girl, who apparently was not beautiful enough for the Chinese government's tastes.

Did you think those tiny Chinese gymnasts were really 16? The government produced passports as proof. Chinese news reports indicate otherwise.

Did you believe what the IOC whispered in your ears, that the gray cloud engulfing Beijing was merely "mist?" Or did you believe your eyes and nose and mouth, which were sure it was smog?

Was Bolt's performance real? Or was it artificially enhanced? He does not have a body that screams "steroids." He has always been a ridiculously gifted runner. He has never tested positive for anything. He deserves the benefit of the doubt. But he is a champion sprinter in the 21st century, and in this age, can you look at any sprinter and be sure he isn't doping?

Bolt said he ate chicken nuggets before each of his races. Let's face it: a man who is willing to eat chicken nuggets before Olympic races is probably not so worried about his fitness that he would take steroids. I mean, first you'd cut out the McNuggets and see if that helped, right? But then, how do we know he ate chicken nuggets? Did we see him eat them?

Were Phelps' performances real? He, too, was a ridiculously gifted athlete at a young age. He has not been linked to drugs, or any sketchy coaches, or anything untoward. He has participated in Project Believe, a program designed so athletes' blood samples can be tested for years to come. Yet in one of his Olympic press conferences, it was clear that at least some foreign reporters are quite skeptical.

Do you buy the IOC's argument that its drug-testing program obviously works, because very few athletes tested positive in these games — proof they are scared to take drugs? Or do you realize that if a lot of athletes tested positive, the IOC would also cite that as proof its program works?

Dara Torres' three silver medals at 41 leave some wondering if her Olympic performance was too good to believe. (Adam Pretty / Getty Images)

Is Dara Torres one of your heroes? SuperMom won three silver medals at age 41, an accomplishment that has elicited both awe and skepticism. But she, too, has participated in Project Believe.

Do the players on the Redeem Team really get along as well as they seem to?

Did China put on the best, most elaborate Olympics of all time? Or was this just a big fancy show to distract us from what's really happening in China?

Some of these are big questions. Some of them have no answers. Some might seem unfair. For sports fans in 2008, skepticism must be fought off at every turn.

For the most part, I choose to believe. I believe Phelps is clean. I believe Bolt is clean. I believe both are athletic freaks, and the world has always produced athletic freaks. I choose to believe.

But those gymnasts are not 16.

Tarnation, Gold Fever!

When the USA gets rid of all the drugs, street gangs, high taxes, bad public schools, and can say this is a safe country, then we can tell other countries how to run theirs. We have lost values, lost morals, lost control of our youth and we still claim we do things better. NOT! China has almost 5 times the paople we do and they have less murder, less drug use, less hate crime, less people complaining and they can complain ,not as we can, but hey at least they can go to school and be safe.Walk down the street and not get shot.

If America would have won all the Gold instead of the Chinese then no one would be saying anything against the so called under age Chinese girls. Hey I live in China 3 months each year. All Chinese look youger then what they really are, get a life, what a bunch of cry babies. USA loses in Gold, then someone must be cheating. What a joke, the USA trains its youth to become Olympic winners, just like the Chinese, only here big companies pay instead of the government. For our government is spending billons on a war we will never win. Same old story, Americans think no one else can win. Well get a life. Track and field is where we failed again. We used to be great, now everyone else is passing us by. Great people as we claim all Americans are, should just give the Chinese credit and say well done. Then train harder to over take them in 2012. Most Gold metals is the winner of the Olympics. Great job China, keep us on our toes.

Dear Mr. Interception,

Since when is having every muscle in your body trained and toned to withstand an extreme amount of punishment NOT athletic, but passing and throwing a ball into a metal hoop IS athletic? The basketball team could never push themselves to the level Phelps has.
If swimming is not an athletic trait, lets see you beat some of those records...didn't think so.

He is saying what he is saying because he IS a role model. Thank God our kids have someone worthwhile to admire...instead of Shaq or Kobe who are just thug criminals who got lucky enough to land a big contract. Their athleticism is aim and getting the ball in the basket. The TRUE athletes are the ones that push themselves physically!

Signed,
A Fan of TRUE Athletes!

As for the Chinese gymnast anyone who has kids knows those girls were no where near 16 years old. I am a gymnastics coach and recall that in multiple international meets the Asian countries have long been suspected of not adhering to the age limit. This needs to stop. Do you really think these girls are 16 and telling the truth (remember they live in a country that if you do not do what the government says you are basically doomed to a life of poverty and disgrace)? Also remember that the gold medal winners pretty much assure their families more wealth better homes, so the parents sure as hech are not going to tell the truth. Geez even their own "state run" press published they were 13 or 14. Get real and investigate this. It is not fair to the other countries who abide by the rules. The rule also is there to protect very young from over training and injuries...not there just because we felt like it.

Mr. Intercaption you are one dumb individual. I think the perfect remedy for your stupidity is to throw you in a pool with Phelps and let you see how amazing this kid is. He is the true meaning of an athlete, a great kid with good values and modesty (unlike Bolt who was obnoxious as hech, boasting all over the track, not shaking his openents hands, etc), with tons of athletic talent. I get very tired of people like you running their mouth about things they know nothing about. Just stay off the chat board unless you have something intelligent to say.

Auntydale...what I as a unbeliever of the Chinese girls ages are their competitive records for the past 5 years as proof. Gymnasts of those skills don't just materialize. If they are 16, then they were competing many years back as juniors. You can't falsify that - and the IOC or FIG should easily be able to come up with that. The fact that those records haven't been brought forward is very damning.

linnerkaye...save me from you screaming patriots...you probably have told all your yuppy republican buddies about the track people and their hearts, and then you go out in the parking lot and hop in your japanese toyota because those domestic car workers are lazy slobs...you all are too full of youselves and your supposed patriotism...

Mr Intercepion
It?s plainly obvious that you have never been involved in any form of high level sport.

Ask your Michael Jordan?s of this world what they think of Phelps and get a true perspective. Your dribble says a lot about your lack of character and experience.

As an Aussie, (that?s short for Australian, look it up on the map, you might learn something) 90% of the population lives on the coast and swimming is a way of life, Phelps is truly an amazing athlete, he performed better than our team combined.

Go back to your blue ribbon you won in junior school, and if your lucky your mum & dad will give you some ice cream for desert for your achievement. Idiot

Mr. Interception,

I have one thing to say to you: go find an Olympic-sized swimming pool and drown yourself in it. It would do the world a favor if there was one less stupid jerk like you in it.

By your screen name, I see you are just a hater. I can't believe you can't give the man who won eight golds credit. Either you are saying these things to get a rise out of people, or your life was/is so full of falling short, you have to criticize people that do make it to the top. Get over yourself, and quit being so envious and jealous. Envy is a sin you know. It's people like you that make the Europeans and the rest of the world think we are whiners. Thanks.

I thought the Olympics were great except for the Track Teams, it goes to leadership not being leaders. If you notice, all the Gold Medal Winners placed their hands over their heart when the anthem was played except the Tract Teams, both the men and women who won the gold. What a shame and a lack of respect for the flag. If it was not for our freedom they would not have even been able to get that gold medal. I have lost a lot of respect for all those runners. They are not winners to me.

interception...so let me get this straight...so a guy who bounces an orange thing while he runs and then throws it at a metal hole is somehow doing something so spectactacular that he has to be used to downgrade a guy who jumps in a whole full of water and uses his arms to go from one side of the hole and back faster than the guy next to him...if you ask me i would say i don't find any big deal with either of the two and i can't believe the people who do them live like bill gates...i don't get it!!!

Didn't the Chinese gymnast age issue come about because there have been discrepancies in their documents for the past two years? It didn't just come out of nowhere. And the "investigation" was underway until the Chinese spokespeople argued that the families are insulted, and their passports are proof of their birthdates being in 1992. Who issued the passports? The same goverment that runs the sports programs--duh.

And we certainly don't want to insult the Chinese government in the middle of the Olympics, do we?

And does anyone else have a problem with NBC only covering USA medal ceremonies?

don't get me wrong, i don't endorse drinking and driving...michael phelps getting a dui is just a sign of the times...used to be the cops would give you a break if they thought you could make it home (or take your beer for their afterhours party...); however, now if they even suspect you've had a drop of alcohol they'll test you immediately....michael phelps did what everyone of you hypocritical 40-50 somethings did, he drove his car after having a couple coldies, now he's labeled a town drunk...here's a toast to you, michael phelps, GREAT SHOW!!!

I am so tired of so many people saying that the Chinese gymnasts are lying about their ages. Most female gymnasts are small. Shawn Johnson is only 4 feet 9 inches tall. Does anyone remember Dominique Dawes and Kerri Strug in 1996? Dawes was 20 years old and looked 14. Strug was 18 and had a squeaky little baby voice. It was because of them (especially Dawes) that people started to talk about the stress the gymnastics put on a girl's body, the delay in the onset of puberty.

At least the press has been responsible and not made any direct statements, only voicing skepticism. Until now. Michael Rosenberg has finally crossed that line.

I liked his article up until the last sentence. "But those gymnasts are NOT 16." How can he make such a definite statement? Does he know? Does he have any proof? Look at the teenaged Chinese divers. Do they look 16 by Anglo standards?

I also thought that one girl looked very young. But she is Asian. Asians look young. Fifteen year old Asian girls can easily look 12. I am Japanese. When I was 20, people thought I was 12! I had to show my ID to get into an R rated movie! My mother had to show her ID to buy beer when she was 44! My friend's mother had to show her ID to get into a bar when she was 38! Truth!

So please stop these absolute statements that the gymnasts are too young. There's no proof. It's time to let it go.

Just thinking out loud here. Would you open up the door to the Law enforcement agents and say YES if they asked you did you break the law? Gee, guess not. Do you think China would admit the girls were under 16? Case closed and China cheated the US out of their hard work for GOLD. Thoght USSR cheated the World and now we have China doing the same things and lets hope 2012 is different..

China does not have to be a great country to put on a great Olympics - which it did.
Pros: Opening ceremony, Great facilities, no terrorist threats
Cons: unfair judging, host country bias, poor air quality

Overall : A-
