Rhythmic gymnast, 17, dies in crash

Brazil’s gymnastic federation says a 17-year-old rhythmic gymnast has died in a car accident.

We remember those who died in the sports world in 2012.

The federation says Eduarda Mello Queiroz, who finished second in this year’s Brazilian championship, was killed early Sunday in a one-car wreck in the southeastern state of Espirito Santo. The car’s driver is in serious condition and another Brazilian gymnast, 19-year-old Natalia Gaudio, sustained minor injuries.

Brazil’s federal police say the car rolled down a small ravine and struck a tree after the driver lost control at a tight curve. Queiroz was on the back seat and apparently was not wearing a seat belt.
