QUESTION Cort Day from Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, on the Giants: "I really think they needed that loss on Sunday. It is stock-taking time and "come down to earth" time for this team. This was a positive loss if any loss can be one. Your opinion, sir?"
Jay Glazer: I think that without a doubt the Saints exposed a lot of problems on defense that Giants themselves didn't know they had, especially in the secondary. If they can't get to opposing QBs, the secondary is more vulnerable than I think they may have known.
The other thing, in their defense, some of the players are saying that as great as Brees is on film, it was much faster in person and took them very much by surprise.
QUESTION Tom Ploskina from Philly, on Ben Roethlisberger: "I am an Eagles fan, but being from Pa. I also like the Steelers. Question being, why in mentioning Brady, Favre, Brees, the Mannings and Romo, do people constantly not mention Big Ben in their praisings? I would love to have him on the Eagles. I think he is the best in the league bar none. Has anyone checked his stats?"
Jay Glazer: Great question ... The reason why is because people are kind of stuck on what Big Ben used to be. Now he's developed into one of the best passers in the NFL, but is still not being recognized.
I am in full agreement with you that he is one of the top 3-4 QBs in the NFL. What he was asked to do early in his career was to be a game manager. But he can make every throw you want, he's extremely elusive in the pocket and does not get the respect he deserves as being an elite player and QB.
QUESTION Darrell Griffin from Kings Mtn. N.C., on the Cowboys: "Will Tony Romo take the 'Boys to the playoffs? Also will Jason Garrett be the next coach, or will Jerry Jones go to someone like Mike Shanahan or some other proven coach that is available?"
Jay Glazer: It's very interesting that you say that. Everyone thinks Dallas should go after the big names. I don't know if I agree with that since they are preparing themselves in case of a lockout.
Plus, don't forget that Jerry Jones doesn't like to give up control. He doesn't want a coach who wants to pick their own personnel or who gives Jones any problems or resistance with handling his team.
Double-whammy from Packers Nation
QUESTION Dennis from Kamrar, Iowa, on the Packers: "Do you think my Packers are getting overlooked in the NFC? A-Rod is having a good year. Yes, he has been sacked A LOT, but he still put up the #s. As far as the D, I think they will come along. I like that they are sitting A.J. Hawk he is not all that good. And they got a hell of a LB in the wings. What do you think of how GB is going to end up in the NFC NORTH?"
QUESTION Mark A. from Bismarck, N.D., on the Packers: "What is wrong with the Green Bay Packers? I think they need a new coach because he can't call offensive plays. He throws the ball too much and doesn't run Ryan Grant. Also they have a very bad offensive line, needs fixing. And their defense can't tackle, rush the passer or cover the WRs of the other team. They should be playing bump and run on the receivers. What do you think, Jay Glazer?"
Jay Glazer: The problem with the Packers is obviously their offensive line. If they can't keep their QB upright and can't open holes for the running game, obviously they're putting the team in bad positions.
In the team's transition to the 3-4 defense, I think they need to send Aaron Kampman after the QB a lot more. Mike McCarthy is an extremely solid coach and one of better coaches in this league at making adjustments when needed.
Remember it was under McCarthy that Favre has his breakout season two years ago. It was also under McCarthy that Aaron Rodgers has blossomed into one of the great young QBs in the NFL. But again, this league comes down to the trenches, and right now they're struggling on both sides of the trenches. Injuries have hit that O-line hard.
QUESTION Scott from North Carolina, on a dreamed-up trade: "How about a Shawne Merriman/Julius Peppers trade?"
Jay Glazer: All they would be doing is trading one guy who wants new contact for another guy who wants a new contract. Plus, one guy's a 3-4 linebacker and the other is not. This trade would be purely fantasy football.
QUESTION Terry Dailey from Elizabeth, Ind., on Willie Parker: "Do you think he will remain a Steeler much longer? I suspect he will be traded and I feel Mendenhall is the better running back. What do you think on the subject, or what have you heard?"
Jay Glazer: I reported on FOX NFL Sunday last weekend that Rashard Mendenhall has taken over as No. 1 on the team's depth chart. If he's got the hot hand, he'll continue to be the main guy. Parker has told me that turf toe injury is very painful.
