The 2009 Major League Soccer playoffs are underway with several new entries in the playoff hunt. Most notable are the Los Angeles Galaxy and the expansion Seattle Sounders FC. Also returning are the winners of the last three MLS Cups in the Houston Dynamo (2006, 2007) and Columbus Crew (2008).

It's been a wild year in MLS with the Sounders setting all kinds of attendance records and fielding a playoff caliber team, to the emergence of Los Angeles amid questions of whether a midseason return of David Beckham might upset team chemistry and the Galaxy's first legitimate chance of making the playoffs since the 2005 season when they won the championship.

The Galaxy's return to the playoffs is almost as amazing as the Sounders as Los Angeles tied for the worst record in MLS in 2008. The MVP of the team may well be someone who isn't even playing. Bruce Arena was brought in to rebuild the club and he has completely remade the roster with only 4 players left from the 2005 championship team. Whether this first year back will be rewarded with a MLS Cup remains to be seen as competition this year seems to be tougher than ever.
