Fox Sports Net?s documentary series Beyond The Glory on Sunday, April 13 at 8 p.m. local time delves into the turbulent career of New York Jets quarterback Vinny Testaverde. His storied football career has been a series of ups and downs, his failures often overshadowing his accomplishments. And while the native New Yorker has scaled some of football?s greatest heights, his road to success hasn?t been an easy one.

Football was a family affair with the Testaverdes. From day one, Vinny?s father Al dreamed that his only son would play the game. With a rifle for an arm and a fierce desire to win, Vinny proved himself worthy of a scholarship to Miami. He led the Hurricanes to the school?s first undefeated season and fulfilled his father?s dream by winning the Heisman Trophy. But on the brink of a perfect season, Testaverde failed to guide his team to a National Championship.

Following a closely watched career at Miami, Testaverde was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the worst team in the NFL at the time. He couldn?t fulfill expectations and endured six losing seasons without the support of his biggest fan. Al Testaverde suffered a heart attack during a game and was told that if he wanted to live, he couldn?t watch his son play.

Eventually Testaverde was traded to Cleveland where he re-established himself as a top quarterback. In 1998, the pieces of his turbulent career came together when the 35-year-old native son returned to his hometown team. He transformed the Jets into a dominant force and brought them to the brink of success, but couldn?t lead his team to the Super Bowl. After a disappointing loss in the AFC Championship game, Testaverde?s world was turned upside down when his father passed away.

Beyond The Glory recounts the rollercoaster ride with Testaverde and those around him. People interviewed for this episode include: coaches Bill Parcells, Jimmy Johnson and Howard Schnellenberger (Miami), San Wyche (Tampa Bay), Bill Piner (high school), friend Mike Azzarelli, mother Josephine Testaverde, wife Mitzi Testaverde and Jets running back Curtis Martin.

Here are some of the quotes from the one-hour show:

Vinny: ?This game is simple. Give me the ball, tell me where to throw it and I?ll do it.?

Vinny on his father: ?My father was very animated, cheering and hollering. I?m sure there were people that were afraid to sit next to him.

?The doctors said ?If you want to stick around for a while, you?d better stay away from going to games and watching games on television when your son?s playing.??

Vinny on Bernie Kosar starting over him at Miami: ?I don?t have any regrets about the coaching decision that was made. Till this day, I think it was the right decision.?

Vinny on losing the Fiesta Bowl: ?It was something that stuck with me for a long time. It was just a sick feeling inside, not playing well enough to help my team win.?

Vinny on Tampa Bay: ?We just weren?t a very good football team. A lot of blame gets put on the quarterback when things don?t go well.?

Vinny on playing for Cleveland: ?Just knowing I had better talent around me gave me confidence to go out and perform better. That was the first year I actually threw more touchdowns than I did interceptions.?

Vinny on his first season with the Jets: ?It was the best season I had in the NFL, getting to do it where I grew up, where my father could hear about it from all his friends and family.

?When you come in as a backup as I did to the Jets, you want to find where you fit in, and what you can do to help the team win football games. But, still there?s that little something inside of you that says, ?Man I just gotta get on the field and play.??

Vinny on his life: ?I don?t know that there are many people as lucky as I am, to have a wonderful family, great friends and playing in the NFL for a team I always dreamed of playing for. I feel so lucky to be able to live my life and love the things I do in my life.?

Bill Parcells: ?There weren?t any throws that Vinny couldn?t make. Not many quarterbacks can throw all the throws, and he could do that.?

Sam Wyche on Vinny at Tampa Bay: ?I think it?s tougher on those kinds of players who are used to winning, who are used to being successful, and then suddenly find themselves in a losing situation.?

Mike Azzarelli on Vinny at Tampa Bay: ?He anguished through every loss and he was really having a difficult time. I don?t think at any other point in his life was there a mountain that he couldn?t climb himself.?

Mitzi Testaverde: ?To be able to play in the same town he grew up in, in front of his friends and family, it was a dream for him?New Yorkers just welcomed him. It was Vinny and the Jets.?

Josephine Testaverde: On Vinny?s father: ?He worked right next door to the Heisman building. He would sit down and have lunch and just dream that one day his son would win the Heisman Trophy.

?He said if my son ever makes it to the Super Bowl I?ll be there and I couldn?t care if I died after that.?

Josephine on Vinny: ?He never gets the breaks. He always had to struggle to get where he is today. Every place he went he had to struggle.?

Bill Piner on Vinny?s first high school football game: ?Cold off the bench, a 15-year-old kid playing in the biggest game in the history of the school throws a 45-yard perfect pass to our tight end who could have caught it if he didn?t have any arms or legs.?

The third season for Beyond The Glory, the Sports Emmy-nominated series, features 20 original programs. Future original episodes include: Mark Cuban (April 20), Nick Van Exel (April 27), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (May 4) and Chris Chelios (May 11).
