Ricky Rudd has his eyes on the clock as the Winston Cup series rolls into Martinsville Speedway for the Old Dominion 500.

Rudd is not only fighting time to catch Jeff Gordon in the season standings, but trying to add another of the Virginia short track's prized grandfather clock trophies to his collection.

"Those clocks are probably the best trophies we race for," said Rudd, a three-time Martinsville winner. "I've won a number of trophies and the Martinsville clocks are not only beautiful, but functional. I think I could find a spot for another at my house."

Rudd, in his second season with Robert Yates Racing, finished fourth and second in the last two races at Martinsville. In April, he lost the lead to teammate Dale Jarrett with six laps left.

"We've got a really good setup for Martinsville," Rudd said. "Actually, we helped our teammate there in April and they ended up beating us with the setup we gave them. I know we will be strong again this weekend and maybe we'll be the team winning."

Rudd is coming off a 21st-place finish in Concord, N.C., that left him 237 points behind Gordon with seven races left.

"It really could have been a whole lot worse for us," Rudd said. "Jeff could have won that race and we really would have lost a ton of points. He finished 16th and we finished 21st, so it wasn't a terrible day for points."

SARA LEE OUT

Junie Donlavey is looking for a new primary sponsor for the No. 90 Winston Cup car following Sara Lee's decision to leave the team. Hut Stricklin will complete the season in the Hills Brothers Ford. He's 40th in the season standings with one top-10 finish in 19 starts.

GOSSAGE HONORED

Texas Motor Speedway general manager Eddie Gossage was honored as the IRL's "Promoter of the Year" on Sunday night.

The IRL season ended Saturday at the Texas track, with Sam Hornish Jr. edging Scott Sharp and Robbie Buhl in the closest 1-2-3 finish in series history. The race was the ninth IRL event at the track since 1997.

GRAND PRIX DATE

The 2002 U.S. Grand Prix is scheduled for Sept. 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, according to a provisional schedule issued by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

The Formula One race will be the second-to-last event on the 17-race schedule in 2002. Mika Hakkinen won this year's race, beating Michael Schumacher by 11 seconds.
