Born in Scotland, Bobby McMahon fell in love with the game after being taken to his first match at the very early age of four.

Bobby McMahon

He played soccer at the school and youth level, before going on to play for Tayport, then one of Scotland's top amateur teams, and was selected for a Scottish Amateurs team trial. He also had a brief spell at the junior level. Junior football is a unique Scottish institution, one step below the Scottish League structure, with no age restrictions.

After immigrating to Canada in 1979, Bobby played and coached a number of teams in Winnipeg while representing the province of Manitoba on many occasions, highlighted by a representative game against Bologna of Italy.

During this spell he was lucky enough to have played for a number of decent sides, winning six provincial championships in eleven seasons and twice taking home bronze medals from the Canadian National Championships. He continues to play at the Masters level - a nice term for "Old Timers" - when the body is willing.

A life-long Dundee supporter, Bobby's greatest memory relates to Dundee winning the Scottish League in the 1960's and their European adventures thereafter. Although he finds it difficult to comprehend, he also fondly remembers Dundee United beating Barcelona and Juventus around the same time. The greatest football thrill however, was attending his first Scotland-England game at Hampden Park, Glasgow, with nearly 130,000 close personal friends and two Englishmen in attendance.

Heroes from days gone bye include Johann Cruyff, Johann Neeskens, Franz Beckenbauer, Denis Law, Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Kroll, Marco Van Basten, Ossie Ardiles, Falcao and Martin Peters.

Since the World Cup in 1994 Bobby has provided soccer analysis for radio station CJOB in Winnipeg and others across Canada. "I penned nearly 250 columns on international soccer for the Winnipeg Sun from 1998 to 2003 and have contributed to When Saturday Comes an alternative soccer monthly available worldwide."

Bobby McMahon joined the Fox Soccer Report team in September 2001 and started writing a weekly column for FoxSoccer.com on MSN in August 2004. He was the runaway winner of the "Best Media Blogger of 2008" poll conducted by the website soccerlens.com.

Hey Bobby , I am Italian and I thought your evaluation of lippi's thinking and the team in general was spot on. I thought your words were perfect to describe the situation. Lippi is just giving them enough rope to hang themselves. The Azzurri will be back once they cut those older players. Excellent evaluation.

Montreal Impact are in their pre-season while their Mexican opponents are in mid-season form. How could you fail to make this point when assessing the Montreal collapse in the heat of a Mexican night where the 20 thousand fans made more noise than 55 thousand at the Big Owe. A north american club will never win the CONCACAF Champions League played at this time of year.

Bobby,

My comment on whether Sasha Kljestan should make a move to Europe or not was read on the Topic of the Week segment last evening. I just wanted to clearify my answer and your response.

First off, I am well aware that Rafa Marquez plays for Barcelona. I did some checking, and it was actually Hugo Sanchez who made the quote in the July 2007 issue of World Soccer. The question was asked to him, Do you think having players based overseas helps the team get to the next level? His response was, "When I say my players should go abroad, I really mean it. One match in a top European league is equivalent to 30 in the Mexican league. I also think the players will benefit a lot by facing the difficulties of adapting to a foreign culture. That strengthens their will and makes them better players."

I understand that Celtic is not Barcelona, and not all European leagues are as good as the MLS. However, Celtic is always competing to reach the final 16 in the Champions League. Whether or not he plays everyday should not hinder his decision.

Look at Freddy Adu. He is a great talent, that spent a majority of his time in the weaker MLS, before his move abroad. His time was spent practicing fancy tricks against weak defenders, instead of ball movement, positioning, and other skills that would help an international career, and in turn help the US national team.

Dear Bobby,

I am British ex-pat now re-located in California and a long time watcher of Fox Soccer Channel and Fox Soccer Report.

Here is a suggestion for you. Is it really necessary to have that techno-music playing in the background when you are showing soccer highlights on FSC Fox Soccer Report.

Please so try and take a page from the BBC's "Match of the Day" show -- which is still the gold standard as far as soccer TV highlights go -- and just show the highlights with the real match sounds. I would also spend more time on the highlights - rather than trying to rush through them, which always seems to be the case. I would suggest five mins of highlights would do any game justice, including and excluding the goals and other ancillary incidents.

I am POSITIVE that your viewers -- as well as the presenters* -- will like it more than the incessant brain-numbing pounding background noise and fast forward snippets of footage that we have to endure.

Also please do include original match commentary (wherever possible) rather than dubbed commentary that preempts the highlights -- believe it or not a lot of us watch Fox Soccer Report with no prior knowledge whatsoever of the scores and our excitement is ruined by the presenters telling us the score before watching the highlights -- worse still even during the highlights (like announcing a goal before it is shown on the highlight sequence).

Again might I suggest that you take a long hard look at BBC's Match of the Day -- which is designed just for that purpose. To give people who have not watched the games on a Saturday afternoon -- i.e. because their Missus' want them to help them pick out curtains or they have to attend a wedding, etc -- and therefore don't know the scores. Match of the Day gives them a perfect opportunity to settle down with a can or two of the gool old "amber nectar" to catch up for an hour on Saturday evening in peace --while the Missus is admiring her curtains !

* I am impressed by the quality of your presenters - Booby, Warren, Max, Carlos et al. Good job lads!

Best regards,

Sheina
California

Bobby and the boys, please for a second explain to me why Manchester United seems to complain about e verything that happens in soccer, and that "Sir Alex", who is given every resource in the world can sit in a post game interview or a interview period and basically sit there and complain about everything that happens to Man U. I do nothing but laugh everytime that Sir Alex talks. He complains about not getting players he wants, yet strangleholds other teams into giving them players IE Berbatov. Sir Alex should shut his mouth seeing is his team is so close to basically being bankrupt that it isnt funny. If Man U wants to be like the New York Yankees then rename your club till then shut up and play soccer.

Best part is that Inter is coming and if Man U loses Vidic like they should then they will see the true power of Zlatan. Best part will be to seeing Man U get taken apart by Inter Milan will be watching Chrissy Ronaldo get pushed around and taken apart literally by Cambiasso the same way that Gattuso did to him a few years ago when they faced AC Milan.

Im tired of the world soccer community bowing down to the Premiership and thinking that the English teams are the greatest in the world, but funny thing is England cant even qualify for the Euros, nor have a decent showing in the last World Cup. The best players in the world play in the Serie A.

Please tell mewhy commentators now praise players for "sheparding the ball out of play" Sorry this is blatant obstruction penelised by an indirect free kick. Defined as deliberately obstructing another player from playing the ball while making no attempt to play the ball. More attention to the proper rules of the game inside of introducing idiotic new rules would help tremedously

Bobby,

Are you guys going to comment on the Canadian National Championship in NFLD. You guys show highlights on the US Open Cup which is equalivent to the Canadian Challenge Cup. I am assitant coach for the Calgary Callies who are currently Holders and are trying to repeat. Our squad has a few players that were on trial with Livingston and a youth player who is most likley going to sign in Scotland. NFLD usually broadcasts the games so i am sure you can get footage as there will probably be 10,000 at each game. The Callies tryed to compete in the round robin with Vancouver,Montreal and Toronto as the Challenge Cup champions but were denied by CSA. This year if we win we will try to be included again as most of our players have played USL Division 1 our in Europe. Hope you can show some footage or comment on this Trophy and maybe help us get included in the Canada Cup

Bobby,
With the upcoming US Open Cup Semifinals, I would like your opinion on what should happen if the Seattle Sounders win it all.
As you are aware the winner of the US Open Cup receives a qualifying round berth in next year's CONCACAF Champions League, however as the Sounders of the USL will cease to exist after 2008 and the MLS Seattle Sounders FC will being play in 2009, would that team be awarded the Champions League berth?
I have started a blog on this subject and hope to sollicit as much opinions as possible, hopefully establishing a dialogue that, should Seattle win, will determine ahead of time what will happen.

Hey Bobby,

You must know that some one out there is playing a pretty funny practical joke on Mitch and Carlos.
See what I mean:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlos_Machado_%28...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Peacock
Someone should re-write your bios as I reckon it?s ?bad for business?. Still funny though! LOL
All of you blokes do a great job on the Fox Soccer Report. Keep up the good work!

Cheers maties,
Jeff
From Montreal QC, Sydney AUS and now in Atlanta, GA

Bobby, don't you think when showing Serie A highlights, there is no need for Jeremy to give us his play by play over the commentary, since the commentary for all italian games are in english now. For the EPL games, Jeremy just lets the tape role, I don't see why they won't do the same with Serie A since you really lose the passion of whats going on at the stadium and the voice of the commentators. Im pritty deflating when watching it.

Bob, I must say that I love your show.
What about showing great "derbies" like Celtic-Rangers, Real Madrid-Barca, Benfica-FC Porto, Olympiakos-Panathinaikos, or even, and why not a Al-Ahly-Zamalek. These are fabulous games, and seeing that football is the global sport, why not show them live on your channel?
Paul Santos,
Toronto, Ontario
SL Benfica fan

Hello Bobby,
I would like your views on the equalizing goal for Fulham against Blackburn last weekend. Referee Mike Riley gave an "indirect" free kick, which he showed by holding up his left arm when the free kick was taken. One of the Fulham players stood on the ball without moving it and Jimmy Bullard strode up and took the kick which went directly into the net. Now on my understanding, and I was a referee, State refere, in Florida for several years, is that the ball has to travel it's circumference on an "indirect" free kick before it becomes an active ball. The only other way an indirect free kick can be deemed a goal is if it is touched by another player before entering the net. As the ball was not passed to Bullard his shot was the free kick, and as no-one touched the ball the resulting play should have been a goal kick. It amazes me that none of the player, commentators or evem Mark Hughes picked up on this. Comments please.

Thank you.

Hello,
I love your show guys and watch it regularly since a few years now, very informative, humour, quality of jugdment and anlysis, and so on...
I just don't understand why quality of canadian live coverage of European games has been so declining. Fox Sports Wolrd Canada used to offer us a lot more coverage, and we now have IFL or FA Archives when we see ads in Fox Soccer reports of live coverage of every interesting games of EPL, Liga or : what a shame, don't you think?
I am very disapointed, and as a soccerfan (and broken knee / former player in Ottawa SL) watching games is a salvation: however, there is not such pleasure anymore !
PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND WHY WE DO NOT HAVE LIVE OR EVEN PLAYED GAMES AND MORE IMPORTANT CONVINCE CANADIAN ADMINISTRATORS OF FOX SPORTS WORLD CANADA TO OFFER US BETTER COVERAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME, PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE!!!
