Rockies Express Meets Red Sox Nation: World Series Game 1 on Tonight on FOX
ERIC AND ERIC ON DECK FOR FOX'S WORLD SERIES GAME ONE COVERAGE Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes along with MLB on FOX analyst Eric Karros join host Jeanne Zelasko and Kevin Kennedy on site for FOX Sports' exclusive coverage of the 103rd Fall Classic beginning tonight at 8 p.m. ET from Fenway Park in Boston. Byrnes and Karros join Kennedy and Zelasko for games 1, 2, 6 & 7 while FOX analysts Mark Grace and Joe Girardi meet Kennedy and Zelasko in Colorado for games 3, 4 & 5. Play-by-play broadcaster Joe Buck and analyst Tim McCarver are in the booth to call the action. Buck calls his tenth World Series, while McCarver is behind the mike for his eighteenth more than any other analyst in World Series history.
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal and veteran announcer Chris Myers serve as field reporters from both dugouts throughout the game. Tonight's Game 1 matchup features former World Series MVP pitcher Josh Beckett against lefty hurler Jeff Francis.
BUCK, MCCARVER & KARROS DISCUSS WHETHER MANNY IS BEING MANNY ALL THE WAY TO COOPERSTOWN Earlier this week, FOX Sports conducted a conference call to preview the 103rd World Series between the Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox. Below World Series analyst Tim McCarver, pregame analyst Eric Karros and play-by-play broadcaster Joe Buck debate whether Red Sox left fielder and lightning rod Manny Ramirez is a great player:
Karros: "I think he's a great hitter but I also think he's one of the best left fielder's to ever play at Fenway. He's going to be exposed in Colorado with that expansive outfield. He doesn't get credit for being as cerebral as he is, when I say cerebral obviously in the context of playing baseball and specifically, hitting. When you look at the way Manny plays the game, when you just break down how he plays the game; I have to say he's one of the greatest players to play."
McCarver: "I think Manny Ramirez is a great hitter but I do not share Eric's thinking on the other part of Manny's game. His defense and base running are deplorable. Not only doesn't he run hard out of the box, he doesn't run out of the box, he walks out of the box. He is a master of the walk-out homer. And when the ball hits the top of the fence and he ends up at first base it's ridiculous."
Buck: "I think he is a Hall of Fame player. He is one of the few guys in the league that hits the best pitchers best pitches and he doesn't go after pitches out of the strike zone. And like Eric said, as a typical left fielder in a normal ballpark, he's way below average because he doesn't move around well. But at Fenway Park, playing that wall; he's an asset. The base running can get under your skin and I'm sure that for somebody like Tim who played in a different era, when that stuff wasn't tolerated, it's maddening. He has been as big a part of what the Red-Sox have done here, going to the World Series two times in the last four years as anybody, maybe the biggest."
