Aikman, Johnson & Switzer Preview 2007 NFL Season and Remember Miami/Oklahoma Rivalry
AIKMAN, JOHNSON & SWITZER PREVIEW 2007 SEASON NFL on FOX lead analyst and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, legendary coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer, along with FOX Sports Chairman David Hill and President Ed Goren previewed FOX Sports' NFL coverage and the 2007 season on a press call yesterday afternoon. A replay of the entire call is now available by dialing 719/457-0820 and entering passcode 5950804 when prompted.
Troy Aikman on the job he thinks Norv Turner will do in San Diego: "I only know Norv as an offensive coordinator and those three years he spent with me in Dallas were three of the best years of my career ... Obviously I'm biased of his abilities. This is clearly the best team that he's had to coach so offensively they're going to continue to be good. But this is his last opportunity to show what he can do as a head coach and I guess as a friend, I hope he does very well."
Jimmy Johnson on his expectations of the Cowboys: "I think the Cowboys should have an outstanding year. They have as much depth on their football team as any team in their division. If their quarterback plays up to what he is capable of playing, I think they should have an outstanding year."
Aikman picks his favorites in each conference: "I like San Diego out of the AFC. I just think that that team is so talented in so many key areas. In the NFC, Philadelphia is hard to bet against. I think Dallas will be pretty good. Those teams will battle it out for the division. In the NFC overall, it's pretty easy to go with Chicago. Looking at their division, I just feel that they are head and shoulders above the other teams."
Barry Switzer on Dallas' season: "I watched Tony Romo throw the ball [a couple of weeks ago] and in my opinion he is the best guy to be there since Troy Aikman. This guy has the ability to make those types of plays and throws. It will come down to how smart he will play. How he goes is how the Cowboys will go."
MLB PLAYOFF CONTENDERS HUNT FOR OCTOBER THIS SATURDAY ON FOX On Saturday, September 8 (3:30 p.m. ET) the FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK continues its push towards the postseason. The MLB on FOX pregame show kicks off at 3:30 p.m. ET featuring host Jeanne Zelasko alongside analyst Kevin Kennedy. In the City of Brotherly Love, the second-place Phillies look to close the gap on the NL East-leading Mets as they host the Marlins. Philadelphia looks for revenge after dropping two out of three from the Marlins last weekend in Miami, slowing down their high speed pursuit.
Meanwhile, Barry Zito and the Giants look to spoil the playoff chances for their arch rival Dodgers at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Looking to keep pace in the NL West and Wild Card races, LA sends newly acquired pitcher David Wells to the mound. In Chicago, the White Sox entertain the Minnesota Twins on the South Side.
NFL ON FOX KICKS OFF 14th SEASON WITH WEEK 1 DOUBLEHEADER ACTION The NFL on FOX's journey to SUPER BOWL XLII begins Sunday, Sept. 9 with Doubleheader coverage of six games each presented in crystal clear HD. The lineup of games is highlighted by a meeting between two of the NFL's best quarterbacks when Donovan McNabb and the Eagles land in Lambeau Field to battle Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. This season, Favre looks to shatter Dan Marino's career TD passing record, an honor that will underscore his certain entrance into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Later at 4 p.m. ET, a possible SUPER BOWL XLII preview pits Lovie Smith's reigning NFC Champion Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers' new commander, Norv Turner. Defensive intensity meets offensive explosiveness when Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher tries to contain Chargers running back and last year's league MVP, LaDainian Tomlinson.
Coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET with the 2007 premiere of America's most-watched pregame show, FOX NFL SUNDAY. The Emmy Award-winning program returns to its Los Angeles roots this season and welcomes new full-time host Curt Menefee. Menefee joins the entertaining cast of co-host Terry Bradshaw and analysts Howie Long and Jimmy Johnson. Also new this year, former Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys head coach Barry Switzer is paired with fellow National Championship and Super Bowl-winning coach Johnson in a segment called "Grumpy Old Coaches." Bradshaw moderates/referees this segment.
NFL Insider Jay Glazer joins FOX NFL SUNDAY in the studio this season, reporting the latest news and notes from around the league. Weather forecaster Jillian Reynolds (not Barberie) returns and comedic prognosticator Frank Caliendo contributes his weekly "Frank's Picks" segment.
AIKMAN, JOHNSON & SWITZER REMEMBER MIAMI/OKLAHOMA RIVALRY As the Miami Hurricanes and Oklahoma Sooners prepare to renew their football rivalry this weekend after a 20-season hiatus, former Miami head coach and FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Jimmy Johnson, former Oklahoma head coach and newest member of FOX NFL SUNDAY's crew Barry Switzer and former Oklahoma quarterback and lead NFL on FOX analyst Troy Aikman look back at their college clashes.
Johnson: "I remember vividly, we were in pregame warm-ups and Jerome Brown and all that crew were very vocal and very confident. So, they were stretching and the Oklahoma players are coming down the ramp, and Jerome started to chant: ‘Fresh meat! Fresh meat!'... But we had a tremendous team and of course, I tried to recruit Troy out of high school. We thought we had him and Barry changed his mind. After we broke his leg in 1985, I thought we might be able to get him to transfer to Miami. I couldn't get him there either. So, finally when I got the first pick in the draft [as head coach of the Cowboys] I went out to work him out and told him, ‘we're gonna draft you No. 1. You're not gonna leave me this time.' "
Switzer: "Oklahoma and Miami were the best two teams in the country. We didn't lose to anybody else. They beat us, we were 0-3 against them but they lost two bowl games that probably kept Jimmy from winning three consecutive National Championships."
Aikman: "I played for Barry [at Oklahoma] and I broke my leg against Miami while Jimmy was coaching there. When I was transferring, Jimmy was recruiting me in Miami but I decided to go to UCLA. Then, I'm getting drafted by the Cowboys and I found out that they were going to hire Jimmy Johnson as the head coach. And I was thinking to myself, 'I can't get away from this guy.' Then next thing I know, Jimmy is leaving and they say Barry is coming in to coach and I say, 'Man, here we go again.' Now I'm on a conference call with Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer! I'll tell ya, I can't get away from them to save my life."
