Nike Hoop Summit to air on FSN
by FOX Sports Net
FSN presents the 11th Annual Nike Hoop Summit from Portland, Oregon's Rose Garden on Saturday, April 12 at 4 p.m. EST/1 p.m. PST. The Nike Hoop Summit is the country's premiere annual basketball game featuring America's top senior boy high school players against a World Select Team comprised of the top players aged 19-years-old or younger from around the globe.
The USA Basketball Junior Select National Team 10-player roster is a coast-to-coast compilation of basketball stand-outs, including high school names such as 2008 Gatorade Player of the Year Jrue Holiday (committed to UCLA) from Campbell Hall H.S. in North Hollywood, CA; 2008 McDonald's All American Game MVP Tyreke Evans (uncommitted) of American Christian in Aston, PA; Al-Farouq Aminu from Norcross H.S. in Norcross, GA (committed to Wake Forest) along with Ed Davis of Benedictine H.S. in Richmond, VA (UNC) and Drew Gordon from Archbishop Mitty H.S. in San Jose (UCLA). Aminu, Davis, and Gordon were all part of the 2007 USA Basketball Men's Youth Development Festival, helping the USA Red Team to a 5-0 record and a gold medal.
Head coach Douglas Mitchell of North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN will look to lead this USA Basketball squad to victory after assisting the USA to a win in last year's Hoop Summit in Memphis, TN. Mitchell is assisted by John Olive, representing Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, CA.
FSN's Nike Hoop Summit action will be called by play-by-play announcer Brian Davis, who covers the Sonics for FSN Northwest, along with FSN analyst and former NBA head coach Bob Weiss. Cara Capauno will have in-game interviews with the players while the action continues.
The 2008 World Select Team is also crammed with talent. Seven World Team members were members of national teams that competed last summer in the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship, and all four World Team members who play at the high school level have signed with top NCAA Division I programs. Jamaican Samardo Samuels of St Benedict's Prep in NJ is committed to Louisville; Angel Garcia of East Chicago Central H.S. and from Puerto Rico is headed to Memphis; Nigerian Emmanuel Negedu of Brewster Academy in NH has signed with Arizona; and Devoe Joseph from Pickering H.S. in Ontario, Canada, has committed to play at Minnesota.
The Nike Hoop Summit has drawn the finest prep stars from around the world, making the tournament the first place to catch future NBA all-stars. More than 40 former USA players and nine former World team members are currently playing in the NBA. Since it's inception in 1995, the tournament has seen 74 alumni drafted by NBA teams, including 14 players drafted in the 2007 and 2006 NBA drafts.
Some of the more prominent players at the Nike Hoop Summit include NBA stars Kevin Durant (Seattle SuperSonics); Kevin Garnett (Boston Celtics); Rashard Lewis (Orlando Magic); Jermaine O'Neal (Indiana Pacers); Elton Brand (Los Angeles Clippers); Baron Davis (Golden State Warriors); Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks); and Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs). A number of superstar college players such as 2008 Sporting News Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough (UNC); Big 12 Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Michael Beasley (Kansas State); Conference USA Freshman of the Year Derrick Rose (Memphis); and Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Kevin Love (UCLA) will participate.
