Center Jordan Staal said Avery, an infamous agitator and unpopular pest, crossed a line with his comments.
"Everyone but him seems to know not to cross it," Staal said. "It obviously wasn't right."
Staal, who is serving as one of the alternate captains this month, said he is thankful controversies such as those Avery has brought to his various NHL employers have no place in the Penguins organization.
"We have a whole bunch of great guys in this dressing room," Staal said. "We very rarely run into anything like that, and if we do it is dealt with quickly and smoothly.
"Obviously, the organization feels a certain way about having character guys in this dressing room, and that's great to be a part of."
RANGERS 3, PENGUINS 2 (SO): Pittsburgh wasted defenseman Mark Eaton's first goal in 91 games and a chance to gain two points on Atlantic Division-leading New York in another third-period collapse at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.
For the second time this season, the Penguins allowed the Rangers to leave the Garden with a shootout victory after New York trailed entering the third period. The Penguins are 0-0-2 at New York this season and 0-3-3 in the regular season at the Garden dating to last season.
The Rangers got a late goal from right wing Petr Prucha, a healthy scratch in 10 previous games, and won the shootout 3-1.
