The Orioles have received numerous inquiries on right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, but they would move him only if they received an overwhelming offer.

Guthrie, who becomes eligible for arbitration after this season, is still inexpensive. If anything, the Orioles need more pitchers like him to reduce the pressure on their promising young starters.

The team also is reluctant to move closer George Sherrill, who has converted 42 of 50 save chances since joining the team and remains under club control through 2011.

Setup reliever Danys Baez, a potential free agent, is the Orioles pitcher most likely to be traded. Baez has held opponents to a .178 batting average and .573 OPS.

  • The Rangers still would consider trading a hitter for a reliever even if they lose outfielder Josh Hamilton for a prolonged stretch. Hamilton should learn Monday whether he needs surgery for an injury that is effectively a sports hernia.

If the Rangers trade, say, outfielder Marlon Byrd or infielder Hank Blalock, they could replace that player internally, promoting Class AAA outfielder Julio Borbon, Class AAA catcher Max Ramirez or Class AA first baseman Justin Smoak.

The Rangers, operators of the game's top-ranked farm system according to Baseball America, also will consider pursuing a starting pitcher such as the Mariners' Erik Bedard or Indians' Cliff Lee.

  • Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik says the team's performance in the next 7 to 10 days will help determine whether he becomes aggressive in the trade market.

The M's eventually could move Bedard and lefty Jarrod Washburn, among others. But at the moment, they trail the Rangers by 5 1/2 games in the American League West and lead the AL with a 3.88 ERA.

"I think right now we are still in it," Zduriencik says. "I'm a realist. But I also think there are some things that can happen here. We're showing signs of swinging the bat better. And we're going to get healthy."

Ryan Rowland-Smith, a left-handed reliever, is expected to return next week, while Shawn Kelley, a right-handed reliever, should be back by the end of June, Zduriencik says.

  • While the Cardinals will pursue a third baseman if Troy Glaus fails to make a successful recovery from shoulder surgery, Glaus himself could become a trade candidate if he proves able to hit but not throw from third base.

The Cardinals have no spot for Glaus other than third. But if Glaus can play first — Albert Pujols' position in St. Louis — he could make sense for teams such as the Mets and Giants. He also could fit in the AL as a DH.
