Phelps came from third place after 50 meters to finish in 50.71 seconds. Phelps also has two silvers and a bronze.

Konrad Czerniak of Poland took the silver Saturday in 51.15 while American Tyler McGill earned bronze in 51.26.

Jason Dunford of Kenya, who led after the first lap, finished fourth.

Geoff Huegill of Australia, the 32-year-old who staged a comeback after a four-year retirement, finished last after winning bronze in the 50 butterfly here.

Missy Franklin of the United States led from start to finish to win her first individual gold medal of the world championships, finishing first in the 200-meter backstroke.

Franklin, who has a gold and silver in American relays and a bronze in the 50 backstroke, finished in a time of 2 minutes, 05.10 seconds on Saturday.

Belinda Hocking of Australia won the silver medal in a time of 2:06.06 while Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands earned the bronze in 2:07.78.

Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe, the world record holder, did not qualify for the final.

Cesar Cielo of Brazil has won his second gold medal of the world swimming championships, finishing first in the 50-meter freestyle "splash and dash."

Cielo, cleared of doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport last week, finished in a time of 21.52 seconds Saturday. He won his first gold in the 50 butterfly last Monday.

Luca Dotto of Italy took the silver in a time of 21.90 and Alain Bernard of France earned the bronze in 21.92.

Cielo is the world record holder in the event, setting a time of 20.91 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in December 2009, just before the high-tech bodysuits were banned in competition.

Inge Dekker of the Netherlands has won the women's 50-meter butterfly, the opening event on the next-to-last night of the world swimming championships.

Dekker finished the non-Olympic event Saturday in 25.71 seconds. Therese Alshammar of Sweden, the world record holder at 25.07 in Rome in 2009, won the silver in 25.76.

Melanie Henique of France earned the bronze medal in 25.86.
