Report: Table tennis champ fined
An Indian table tennis star paid a high price for wildly celebrating his first national title after wrestling the men's crown from the country's six-time champion, The Times of India reported.
A. Amalraj screamed in delight and flung his racket away before climbing on to the table after beating top seed Achanta Sharath Kamal 4-2 in Sunday's final.
The umpires showed him a yellow card for the over-the-top display, but Amalraj failed to take the warning and continued to make a scene around the court, before officials gave him the red card.
The paddler, who failed to shake his defeated opponent's hand until instructed by his coach, was fined 210,000 Indian rupees ($4,220), which amounted to 25 percent of the prize money he was awarded for his maiden Senior National Table Tennis title.
Amalraj later appeared apologetic for his behavior, which he said "was not intentional" and done "in excitement."
He accepted his punishment, saying, "I don't mind losing a portion of the money."
