A 21-year-old senior lacrosse player at Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia is dead after he and a friend were jumped and beaten to death early Saturday morning, according to a report.

Kevin Figaniak and a companion who has not been named were attacked by a group of three or four men in their 20s, according to multiple reports, after exchanging verbal “unpleasantries” as they left a neighborhood bar around 1:45 a.m. Craig Tyler Peacock, 22, and Jarrett Mathis Chandler, 24, were arrested and charged with the murder.

In a taped interview, Peacock and Chandler stated that they punched and kicked a man they were fighting before leaving him lying on the ground, The Daily Mail reports. The Mail also indicates Figaniak and his companion were “jumped from behind,” although no source for that description is given.

Peacock and Chandler both work in the oil and gas industry, according to reports, but they are not West Virginia natives. Police are still investigating more suspects.

TRAGIC SPORTS DEATHS

Remembering the many athletes sports lost way too soon.

Figaniak played for Wheeling Jesuit’s men’s lacrosse and club ice hockey teams, and was described by a high school teammate in Perkasie, Pa., as “one heck of a hockey player.”

He scored 14 goals and had eight assists last spring for the Cardinals’ lacrosse team.
