Rafael van der Vaart has played down talk of a return to Dutch giants Ajax although he admits his Real Madrid future remains unclear.

2009 Summer Transfers

Ajax boss Martin Jol has confirmed he was keen on bringing Van der Vaart back to Amsterdam, where he started his career before moving on to Hamburg and then Madrid.

The 26-year-old has been a peripheral figure at the Bernabeu, sparking talk of a January exit. And while he appears ready to consider a transfer, he is not interested in linking up with Jol's side.

"In principle I find it too early (to return) and I say no," Van der Vaart told De Telegraaf newspaper.

"I do not know if I will stay at Real Madrid, but there are other options."

Jol told Sport1 on Monday: "I hope he comes. With him we would have the best midfield in Holland."
