Players and team officials, who are trying to secure a third straight Serie A title this weekend, joined the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square for the pope's weekly audience.

"I take the chance to underline once again the importance of the moral values of sport in educating new generations," Benedict said after mentioning the team's presence in his address to the crowd.

Captain Javier Zanetti later presented the pope with a blue-and-black Inter jersey with Benedict's name on it.

Inter president Massimo Moratti and manager Roberto Mancini were also at the audience.

Inter leads the Serie A with 81 points with two games left in the season. AS Roma is second with 78, followed by Juventus (70) and Milan (61).
