North, Central American and the Caribbean's national teams embark on the journey to be one of 4 or 5 teams to join hosts South Africa at the 2010 World Cup.
Qualifying takes place over two years. The 12 semifinal teams will play each other team in their three initial groups in a home and home format, the top two teams from each group moving on to the final stage.
The final six teams, or the 'hexagonal,' will play each other home and away, combining for 10 games. The top three earn an automatic berth in the 2010 World Cup. The fourth-place team will face CONMEBOL's fifth-place team in a home and home playoff series.
The United States are the reigning North American champions after defeating Mexico in the final of the 2007 Gold Cup.
