Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has threatened to set Liverpool a deadline for their protracted courtship of Gareth Barry.

2008 Summer Transfers

The Reds have been pursuing Barry since the beginning of the summer, but since Villa have rejected a number of offers, the deal has stalled.

Barry has been waiting in limbo while the clubs try to settle on a price for him.

O'Neill said: "We don't know where we stand at this minute.

"Liverpool have not officially come back to us in any form of writing. It is a really awkward position and at some stage there will have to be a timescale on it because we cannot just keep going on. We have got our own plans to make and we shouldn't be at the behest of Liverpool football club. We have got to get on with things."

O'Neill, who set a £18 million price for the England midfielder, is still hoping he stays put.

He added: "My preference - and hopefully I'm speaking for a lot of Villa fans, if not all of them - is that we would like Gareth to stay at the football club.

"Deep down we would love him to stay."
