U.S. Soccer in the spotlight
The talented central defender for Borussia Dortmund was born in 1988 in Banja Luka, Yugoslavia, and is eligible to play for either the United States, Serbia or Bosnia-Herzegovina.
His U.S. eligibility stems from the fact that Subotic's family moved to Germany in 1990 to flee the Yugoslavian civil war, then on to the United States in 1999, later becoming U.S. citizens.
Subotic represented the U.S. at the U-17 and U-20 levels earlier in his career, but is still not tied to any one nation until playing for a senior national team in a FIFA sanctioned event.
Until recently, Subotic had aspirations of playing for the German national team, but FIFA recently denied his eligibility based on new rules regarding players and their national teams.
Agencije has reported that Subotic will play for Serbia in their upcoming World Cup qualifier against Romania on March 28, 2009. A FIFA approval is still pending before the stopper can suit up in Serbia's colors.
Subotic had been invited to play in next week's Serbia friendly against Bulgaria in Belgrade, but he opted to stay in Germany with Dortmund to concentrate on his match fitness.
Subotic has started 11 games for Dortmund this season in the Bundesliga and has scored three goals.
