Brown vs. Stoops: Top 5 Red River games
OCT 10, 2012 4:51p ET
Bob Stoops and Oklahoma lead Mack Brown and Texas 8-5 over the 14-year period. Brown is 9-5 against the Sooners, having beat OU in 1998, the year before Stoops was hired.
"I could care less about that," Stoops said. "It's about the players and the teams and everything else. It's not Mack and I."
Stoops might not care, but that doesn't mean the rest of us don't. With that in mind, here's the top-five games between Stoops and Brown.
The rankings: Oklahoma 3, Texas 5
Final score: Oklahoma 14, Texas 3
The game: The game is way-more famous in Norman than it is in Austin, thanks to the play of defensive back Roy Williams who soared over Texas fullback Brett Robin into the arms of Texas quarterback Chris Simms. With the Sooners protecting a 7-3, fourth-quarter lead and only 2 minutes, six seconds to play, Texas began the drive from its 3-yard line. On the first play, Williams crashed into Simms, the ball popped into the air and was picked off by Teddy Lehman for a touchdown.
The rest of the season: The teams came in with impressive records, but neither team finished that way. After the loss, Texas won six in a row before falling in the Big 12 title game. OU peaked at No. 3 that season, but fell to Nebraska and then lost a chance to play in the Big 12 title game when the Sooners were upset at home against Oklahoma State.
The rankings: OU 1, Texas 5
Final score: Texas 45, Oklahoma 35
The game: A record crowd of 92,182 saw the highest-scoring game in the series. Texas had 438 yards, the Sooners 435. The difference was Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford and his two interceptions.
The rest of the season: As big as the game in Dallas was, it didn't compare to how big the game was in hindsight. Texas went on to lose to Texas Tech and the Sooners ended up beating Texas Tech. All three teams tied for the Big 12 South title, but Oklahomagot the nod to play in the championship game.
The rankings: OU 2, Texas 5
Final score: Oklahoma 12, Texas 0
The game: Both defenses were outstanding and both quarterbacks struggled. Kejuan Jones ran for a fourth-quarter score, amounting for the only TD of the game. Texas quarterback Vince Young completed just 8-of-23 passes while OU quarterback Jason White was 14-for-26 for 113 yards and two interceptions. The difference in the game? Texas lost three fumbles.
The rest of the season: The loss was the only one of the season for Texas. The Longhorns finished the season on a seven-game win streak and beat Michigan in the Rose Bowl. OU went on to win its next seven games as well, but the Sooners were crushed by USC in the national title game, 55-12.
The rankings: OU unranked, Texas 2
Final score: Texas 45, Oklahoma 12
The game: Texas ended a run of five wins in a row by beating up on the Sooners 45-12. The win was the biggest by Texas in the series. Texas quarterback Vince Young threw for 241 yards and three touchdowns in the rout.
The rest of the season: The Sooners limped away from Dallas 2-3 on the season, but went on to win the Holiday Bowl. Meanwhile, the victory in Dallas kept Texas rolling -- beat USC in that epic matchup to win the national championship.
The rankings: Oklahoma 10, Texas 11
Final score: Oklahoma 63, Texas 14
The game: The teams entered the game with the highest rankings between the two since 1984 and it started a rapid ascent for the Sooners, which held Texas to just 154 yards and forced three turnovers while ending a four-game losing streak to the Longhorns. OU's Quentin Griffin scored six times and Josh Heupel threw for 275 yards. The Sooners held Chris Simms to 63 yards passing and racked up 534 yards of offense in the most lopsided win in series history.
The rest of the season: The victory over Texas was the first of three in a row against Top 11 teams for Oklahoma, who beat Kansas State the next week and No. 1 Nebraska after that. The Sooners went on to win the Big 12 title and the national championship. Texas won its next six but fell to Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.
