Cowboys DE Spencer still not cleared to run

The veteran defensive end has hopes of being back on the field in time for the season opener on Sept. 8 and that goal hasn't changed despite the fact that he hasn't been cleared to run.
The current stage of Spencer's rehab has the 29-year-old lifting weights, riding an exercise bike and working on an elliptical machine.
"The more strength I build up, the more stuff I’m able to do in the weight room,” Spencer said. “It’s making me be able to walk a little stronger and feel less pain each day, so it’s getting better."
Some might think that if a player is going to be sidelined because of an injury, the preseason is the ideal time. But Spencer doesn’t see it that way.
"I don’t think any time is really good to miss," Spencer said. “I like being out there. You can only get better by being out there. I’m actually not helping myself right now."
Spencer made his first Pro Bowl last season after recording a team-high 95 tackles and a career-best 11 sacks.
