Lowe will report to camp Friday on a minor-league deal and general manager Jon Daniels expects him to work with relievers when he reports, although starting is still in option.
"Derek is a versatile veteran guy who could fill a variety of roles for us," Daniels said. "He is a strike thrower, gets groundballs, and was throwing well at the end of last season."
Lowe, 39, pitched for both Cleveland and the New York Yankees. He went a combined 9-11, making 21 starts for the Indians and pitching exclusively in relief for the Yankees.
Lowe has a career mark of 175-157 with a 4.00 ERA. He made his big-league debut with Seattle in 1997 and spent the majority of his career with Boston, winning 21 games in 2002. He's started 377 times and pitched in relief 295 times and has 86 career saves.
