Sinkhole cancels BP at Rangers Ballpark

A plastic pipe behind the pitcher's mound broke, causing a sinkhole in the spot where the crew connects the hose to water the field.
Work on the hole, which began before 4 p.m., forced the cancellation of batting practice for both the Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians. Texas pitching coach Mike Maddux said the hole was about the size of a large trash can. At one point, three members of the grounds crew had their head in the hole at the same time.
The grounds crew worked on the area for nearly two hours, with Texas manager Ron Washington coming on the field to survey the scene. They completed work on the area just before 6 p.m.
On the last homestand, a game against Arizona was rained out because a strong storm hit the ballpark and the grounds crew was unable to secure the tarp because the storm hit the area so quickly.
