Renault has finally officially confirmed that it has concluded a deal with Lotus for “2014 and beyond.”

Although the two parties have prepared for this season as normal the contract was not signed until commercial arrangements were completed. The delay is a clear indication of the difficult financial situation at the team.

Gerard Lopez, the Lotus team owner, has played down suggestions the Enstone squad is still grappling with financial problems.

The team’s problems of late last year, when Kimi Raikkonen went unpaid and crucial negotiations with the Quantum group faltered, are well-known.

But Lopez said that the decision not to test the new car at Jerez recently is not because Lotus had no money.

Renault took advantage of “promotional event” running by Lotus in Jerez to put some miles on the latest updates introduced since it had problems in the group test at the same venue.

Lotus had two 100kms days available under the FIA sporting regulations, although the first on Friday was wasted when the E22 did only one lap. However, the maximum mileage was achieved on Saturday.

McLaren has announced that Eric Boullier will take up the job of racing director on Feb. 3.

The former Lotus team principal will report to a new chief executive officer of McLaren Racing, who has yet to be appointed, and who will in turn report to Ron Dennis, who is head of the whole McLaren Group. In the interim, managing director Jonathan Neale will hold that position.

Lotus has countered speculation about the legality of its twin-pronged nose by insisting that it is legal.

Technical director Nick Chester said: “As you know, we have passed all the necessary crash tests and we are very confident that our design complies with all the FIA legal requirements. We have just taken an innovative direction, and one that’s different to the other teams. Where there are so many variations in design, there is always bound to be a little talk, but we remain relaxed and focused on our design and progression.”
