Reigning World Champion Marc Marquez topped the first day of MotoGP preseason testing at Sepang in Malaysia.

The 20-year-old Repsol Honda star traded first place with Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi for much of the morning session, but as track temperatures dropped, so too did Marquez’s lap times. In the closing stages, Marquez posted  2:00.286 to firmly claim fast-lap honors.

Bradley Smith is extremely confident that he and new Monster Yamaha Tech3 team-mate Pol Espargaro will be in a position to achieve great things heading into the 2014 season.

At the first 2014 pre-season test, which came immediately after the final race of last year in Valencia, Smith ended proceedings in second position and just three tenths of a second down on Repsol Honda Team’s World Champion Marc Marquez.

Christmas time is often the period when family photo albums are opened to re-live some special past moments. Well, the same happens at motogp.com HQ, where we found a couple of very similar pictures from two of our current World Champions.

Pol Espargaro took his first title this year in the Moto2 class, whilst Marc Marquez made it three, adding the premier-class crown to his 125cc and Moto2 titles from years before. Yet looking back to 2004 it would have been tough to predict the future success of the pair, as they squared up in the national Catalunya 125cc Championship, as pictured.

In that year it was Espargaro who took the title, with Marquez finishing second, with Marquez repaying the favour in the 2012 Moto2 championship.

After the exciting 2013 season and before the engines roar again in 2014, the riders of all three MotoGP categories are approaching their well-deserved Christmas holidays in very different ways.

2013 MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez, as every year, will spend the holidays surrounded by his family in his native Cervera in Spain, trying to rest between his multiple off-track events with his brother, training partner and Moto3 rider Alex Marquez.

MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports SL is set to release a feature-length documentary reviewing Marc Marquez’s first season in MotoGP, in which he emerged as the best newcomer of 2013 in spectacular style.

The rider from Cervera, Spain, who had already taken World Championship titles in the 125cc and Moto2 tiers – had a brilliant first year in the premier class, fighting for the title with teammate Dani Pedrosa and double World Champion Jorge Lorenzo, as well as his childhood idol Italian rider Valentino Rossi.
