Championship leader Marc Marquez edged out title rival Jorge Lorenzo to claim pole position for Sunday’s Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón.
The young Spaniard used a late flyer (1’47.804) to claim his third successive pole, crushing Casey Stoner’s previous lap record set in 2011 (1’49.046).
Lorenzo tried to take the fight back to Marquez in the closing moments of Q2 but with his Yamaha M1 lacking high-end speed down the long straight in the final sector, he was unable to do so and will start second.
The Saturday morning session for the MotoGP class at the Gran Premio Iveco de Aragón saw restricted action on a damp track after overnight rain, with Valentino Rossi taking P1 with a late best time. However, championship leader Marc Marquez’s Friday afternoon lap time remains quickest of the weekend so far.
Rossi’s best time of 1’50.464 came at the end of the run as the track dried, with Alvaro Bautista, Nicky Hayden, Aleix Espargaro and Bradley Smith also in the FP3 top five.
As was the case Thursday, charity cars continued to dominate the Friday action at the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector-Car Auction.
The big seller was a 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Penske Racing No. 2 Dodge Charger driven by Brad Keselowski last year as he drove to his first Cup championship. Donated by team owner Roger Penske, the car sold for $500,000 with all proceeds going to benefit the NASCAR Foundation, which involves itself in a variety of charitable efforts for children in need.
