F1: John Button, father of Jenson, dies at age 70

John Button, the father of Jenson and formerly a top rallycross driver in his own right, has passed away after a suspected heart attack at his home in France. He had celebrated his 70th birthday in Hungary last year.

A wonderful, outgoing character, it goes without saying that he was Jenson’s number one supporter throughout the latter’s career. John took Jenson through the karting ranks and then attended all but one of his F1 starts, only missing out through illness. He had hundreds of friends up and down the paddock, and not just at McLaren or Jenson’s previous teams.

The TUDOR United SportsCar Championship make its debut in grand style, taking the green flag at the 52nd running of the iconic Rolex 24 of Daytona Jan. 25-26, with the FOX Sports family of networks delivering 15 hours of live coverage, beginning Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 PM ET on FOX.

Bob Varsha once again leads a broadcast booth that includes Calvin Fish, Dorsey Schroeder, Brian Till, Tommy Kendall and Justin Bell. Chris Neville, Jamie Howe, Andrew Marriott and Matt Yocum report from the pits.

“There’s lots of reasons why the atmosphere in the garage at the Rolex 24 at Daytona is unlike any other race, and the stellar driver lineup is first among them,” Varsha said. “To be honest, we try hard on the television side to make sure the full-season drivers don’t feel they’re being ignored when Daytona becomes the racing version of a red carpet premiere. But we probably shouldn’t worry, because the series regulars naturally want to race against the best competition, and the new TUDOR United SportsCar Championship has made it easier than ever to bring together that pool of driving talent from around the world. It’s fun to watch the drivers interact at the track, knowing that each has just one goal in mind, and that is winning a Rolex.”

Second-day coverage of the twice-around-the-clock event begins Sunday, Jan. 26 at 7 AM ET on FOX Sports 1 and runs through the conclusion at Daytona International Speedway.

Overnight coverage from the event is live-streamed on FOX Sports GO from Jan. 25 at 9 PM ET to Jan. 26 at 7 AM ET, with live on-board coverage from multiple vehicles streaming throughout the event on SPEED: the Motors on FOX Blog.

Corvette’s Stingray is the iconic American sports car. Derived from an innovative 1958 race car conceived by legendary GM stylists Bill Mitchell and Larry Shinoda, it looks like nothing before or since. Equally legendary engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov gave it an independent rear suspension and 50/50 weight distribution, while Chevrolet’s various V8s made it the quickest and fastest car in the world when it appeared in 1963.

Over its five-year production run, the Stingray just got better and better: variable-rate springs, Delco four-wheel discs, knock-off alloy or Rallye wheels and best of all, the daunting big block V8.

Then there’s L88. RPO L88 is Chevrolet’s answer to the Shelby Cobra 427, a no-holds-barred race car just barely civilized enough to drive on the street. The 427cid V8 has a special block cast with high nickel-content steel. Among the race-oriented features are aluminum heads with 12.5:1 compression ratio, high-lift camshaft and 850cfm four barrel carburetor. General Motors had restrictions on advertised horsepower, so the L88 was intentionally underrated at 430hp, about one horsepower per cubic inch. The actual dynamometer output for a stock L88 is 560hp. L88 RPO is far more than just an engine. Along with a Muncie M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed gearbox and G81 posi-traction Limited-Slip, the L88 Package includes J56 dual-pin caliper HD disc brakes, J50 power brakes, F41 special suspension, K66 transistor ignition and “Power Bulge” hood.

How rare is rare? How special is special? Well, during a decade ending in 1957, the tiny Talbot factory in the Paris suburb of Suresnes handcrafted a total of 750 T26 chassis.

But out of even that small number, they assembled just 19 chassis for the ultimate version, the Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport GSL. Only 11 survive today. Compared to the 39 Ferrari GTOs derived from a long line of Ferrari 250 GTs, for example, a Talbot-Lago Grand Sport GSL is exceptionally rare and very, very special. It’s also wildly underpriced in today’s collector car market.

Carlos Sainz of Spain won the seventh stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday, while countryman Nani Roma maintained a large lead in the overall standings for cars.

The car division drove a 500-kilometer loop near Salta, Argentina, and Sainz took advantage of a speedy special suited to his buggy to lead for the entire day and win his second stage of the race and 27th in his Dakar history.
