Cars: 2014 VW Passat TDI Review

The new diesel-ran Volkswagen Passat TDI produces 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque.

The new diesel-powered Volkswagen Passat TDI produces 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, and gets 43 miles per gallon on the highway.

The Volkswagen Group, parent company of a host of automakers including Volkswagen and Audi, is one of the world’s leaders in diesel passenger-car technology and in recent years has really stepped up its game.

In Europe, diesels have been popular for decades because of their frugality with fuel, an important factor given the expense of filling up a car in Europe. In Germany, for example, gas is now about $8 a gallon, more than double what it costs in most U.S. markets.

Lewis Hamilton ended Friday in Malaysia in fourth place, with a best lap some 0.142s off Nico Rosberg.

Like his team mate, Hamilton had concerns about the tires.

“We were just working to understand the tires, which are very, very hot,” he said. “And also just making sure that the balance is right, so you can go as long as possible.

Nico Rosberg set the pace in Malaysia on Friday, but the Mercedes driver admitted that keeping his tires in good shape was a major concern.

“It was a decent day,” said Rosberg. “It was very, very hot, tough for the car and tough for the tires. We never expected so much tire degradation, it’s just massive degradation out there, which is a big challenge. For sure there will be lots of different strategies. With the tires, anything can happen.”
