Lewis Hamilton came back from a disastrous start to finish the first day in Australia on top of the times, emphasizing that as expected Mercedes will set the pace this weekend.

Hamilton stopped on track at the start of FP1 due to a sensor issue, but ran 37 laps without issue in the second session to lead his teammate Nico Rosberg by just 0.157s.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso set the fastest time in Friday’s opening practice for the Australian Grand Prix, while pre-race favorite Lewis Hamilton was one of several drivers to strike trouble as entire field struggled to master their all-new engines and radically redesigned cars ahead of the Formula 1 season opener.

Hamilton was unable to complete a single lap after his Mercedes engine automatically shut down due to an oil pressure alarm on his first tour of the Albert Park circuit. With repairs to the complex V6 turbo hybrid engines taking much longer than last year’s powertrains, Hamilton was unable to emerge in the next 90 minutes.

A 20-turn street circuit consisting of four chicanes on the roads of Beijing has been revealed as the inaugural circuit for the new Formula E Championship.

The series will run ten races from September 2014 to June 2015, and will race on street courses only in cities such as Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Monte Carlo and will finish up the season in London. The long straights and late braking zones drawn out in the design hope to provide for some exciting racing to kick off the series, which will be shown LIVE on Fox Sports 1 all season long.

Daytona is as brutal as they come and it’s for that very reason why the winners of the prestigious event are a who’s who of the sport. Last Saturday night, a pair of familiar faces with past success at the World Center of Racing stood atop the podium. With this big test now out of the way for the world’s best riders, the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross season now hits the home stretch and, unfortunately for the 450SX Class field, time is not on their side as they look to track down Ryan Villopoto.

Each week, The Holeshot will provide 22 takeaways – a full starting gate – from the most recent round of action.
