WRC: Ogier Wins Season-Ending Wales Rally

World champion Sebastien Ogier capped his title-winning season with another victory at the Wales Rally on Sunday.

The Frenchman claimed his ninth win of the year ahead of Volkswagen teammate Jari-Matti Latvala. Thierry Neuville, in a Ford, ended third, a result that allowed the Belgian to finish runner-up in the overall standings.

Ogier clinched his first world title in front of his home fans last month at the Rally France.

A frustrated Pastor Maldonado suggested that Williams had deliberately made his life difficult in qualifying in Austin.

Maldonado qualified 18th, while teammate Valtteri Bottas made Q3 and will start ninth.

Relations between the Venezuelan and his team have become increasingly strained since he made it clear that he was leaving.

Mark Webber just missed out on landing his third pole in four races when he was pipped by teammate Sebastian Vettel.

Webber was quicker after the first runs, and while he improved on his second, a tiny mistake towards the end of the lap made the difference.

“Obviously there are two shots, we both had two sets of options,” said Webber. “The first part of the lap was very good, I was happy with that. Didn’t quite get 19 and 20 as I wanted. If I just repeated what I did initially in Q3 probably it was going to be enough but tried to squeeze a bit more out.

Kurt Caselli Killed In Baja 1000 Crash

Off-road racing legend Kurt Caselli passed away Friday from serious head injuries suffered in a crash during the Baja 1000 race in Mexico.

According to a statement issued by SCORE International – the racing sanctioning body behind the event – the crash occurred at 4:30 p.m. PT when Caselli was leading in the late stages of the 883.1-mile race.

Caselli’s KTM team, who have now recovered the bike, discovered traces on the machine that indicate he had collided with some small animal, which apparently caused the crash.

Mexican fans in Austin will be frustrated to learn that Esteban Gutierrez has received a 10-place grid penalty for impeding Pastor Maldonado in Q1.

Gutierrez was weaving to get heat into his tires, and the FIA noted that he was “performing maneuvers that the stewards considered dangerous.”
