Target Chip Ganassi Racing announced Thursday that Dario Franchitti will no longer compete in motor sports racing, citing injuries he suffered in a crash Oct. 6.

Franchitti suffered two spinal fractures, a fractured right ankle and a concussion in a vicious crash at the Houston Grand Prix where his car went airborne and into a catchfence.

Since the crash, Franchitti has been under the care of doctors and nurses who have advised the 40-year-old Scotsman to step away from racing. The doctors pinpointed an increased risk of re-injury to Franchitti’s head and spine, which could affect his future health.

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso posted the fastest time in the first practice session at the United States Grand Prix, followed closely by McLaren’s Jenson Button in a session first delayed by fog and then interrupted and shortened because the medical helicopter was late to arrive.

Alonso drove the Circuit of the Americas in 1 minute, 38.343 seconds. That was 0.0028 seconds faster than Button.

Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel, who is chasing a record eighth consecutive victory in a single season, was 18th at 1:40.662.

Dani Pedrosa looks forward to his recuperation period, having undergone surgery in Barcelona on Thursday immediately after the MotoGP test session in Valencia.

The operation, carried out by Dr. Xavier Mir at Barcelona’s Quiron Dexeus University Hospital, involved removing a plate and 13 screws from the Repsol Honda Team rider’s right collarbone. These had been inserted after the Spaniard was injured in a crash with Marco Simoncelli at the 2011 French Grand Prix.

“I’ve undergone surgery to remove the plate and 13 screws from my right collarbone operation in 2011, which I required as a result of the crash I had that season,” Pedrosa explains on Friday.
