Felipe Massa was left frustrated at the end of the Abu Dhabi GP after Ferrari put him onto medium rather than soft tires, costing him pace and the chance to beat teammate Fernando Alonso.

Massa had run 18 laps from the start on soft tires, and Ferrari made the call to put him on mediums for the final stint despite the fact that there were only 17 laps left to run, the car was lighter, and the temperature had dropped dramatically. Massa eventually finished eighth while Alonso, who stopped 11 laps from home for softs, finished fifth.

Fernando Alonso says that fifth place was the best he could have achieved in Abu Dhabi, and the result was good damage limitation given Ferrari’s lack of pace during the weekend.

“I think I did my maximum,” he said on Sunday night. “The car in front was 20 seconds ahead. It’s true that I lost a little bit of time with the traffic, but 20 seconds is a lot of time, but we didn’t have the pace to be in the top four. And top five is the maximum. We have one Mercedes in front, one behind.

Sebastian Vettel lodged another personal landmark with his seventh consecutive win in Abu Dhabi, but as usual, the 2013 World Champion was keen to take the focus off the statistics.

He also pointed out that it wasn’t as routine as it might have looked from the outside.

“The thing is that what people see is seven races,” he said. “People don’t see the challenge it takes every single race to nail it. It’s been exceptional. The fact that we got everything right – smooth pit stops, reliability – all these things need to come together. The numbers are not that important to me, but equally they make me very, very proud.”
