Jorge Lorenzo’s impressive win in the Japanese Grand Prix marked a significant milestone for Yamaha as the Japanese marque celebrated its 200th race victory in the premier class of the World Championship.

Having claimed his own 50th career win the previous time out at Phillip Island, Lorenzo’s Motegi success marked his 30th in the premier class as well as the 200th for Yamaha, whose first as a company in the premier class came courtesy of Britain’s Chas Mortimer in the 1973 Spanish Grand Prix at Montjuic Park, Barcelona.

Grosjean managed to get to the end on only one stop after offloading his soft tires on lap 13. Lotus team mate Kimi Raikkonen tried to do the same after pitting on lap seven, but didn’t make it.

Fernando Alonso’s hopes of a decent result in the Indian GP were over at the first corner after he hit the rear of Mark Webber – ironically the other front-running driver who took a gamble on qualifying on the medium tire.

Alonso also hit Jenson Button on the first lap. A second lap stop for a new nose then ruined his strategy and left him struggling to catch up. He eventually finished 11th.
