Former Formula One test driver Maria de Villota was found dead in a hotel room in Seville on Friday, and police said it appears she died of natural causes. She was 33.

Spanish police told The Associated Press that De Villota was discovered in the Hotel Sevilla Congresos in the morning, dead “apparently from natural causes.” An autopsy will be carried out.

De Villota was seriously injured last year in a crash during testing for the Marussia F1 team in England, losing her right eye and sustaining serious head injuries that kept her hospitalized for a month.

Sebastian Vettel had the fastest time in the second practice for the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday, indicating the German is in good position to clinch his fourth Formula One championship this weekend.

Vettel was 0.168 seconds faster than Red Bull teammate Mark Webber around the Suzuka circuit. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was two-tenths of a second off Vettel’s time.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton had the fastest lap in Friday’s opening practice session for the Japanese Formula One Grand Prix, edging teammate Nico Rosberg and championship leader Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton’s time of 1 minute, 34.157 seconds around the Suzuka circuit was just 0.330 seconds faster than Rosberg. Vettel was six tenths of a second off Hamilton’s time.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver Dario Franchitti was released from Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center in Houston on Thursday.

He will be traveling to Indianapolis where he will be reevaluated over the next few days and ultimately await a second surgery to his right ankle, which had previously been stabilized.

Franchitti stated:

“I’m overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and I’m thankful to have such a great family and such wonderful friends and fans. Thanks to everyone at the hospital and the track who took such good care of me during my stay in Houston. I look forward to watching Scott (Dixon), Alex (Tagliani) and the Target team next weekend on television, and will be pulling for them as they go for another championship.”
