Romain Grosjean continued his run of strong results with a superb second in Austin, having got ahead of Mark Webber at the start and survived intense pressure from the Australian in the closing laps.

It was Grosjean’s fourth podium in five races, but his first second place of the season.

“I think the strategy was pretty clear,” he said of his efforts to stay in front. “We were copying what Mark was doing. When he was pitting for hard tires, we pitted for hard tires, if he was pitting for prime or option. Then in the race I was just trying to make as much gap as I could before the DRS zone, so turns eight and nine are pretty hard to follow another car.

Sebastian Vettel has set a lot of records over his Formula 1 career, and in Austin today he achieved another landmark when he beat Michael Schumacher’s record to become the first man to win eight straight races in a single season.

Alberto Ascari won nine times over 1952-’53, but nobody had won more than seven in a single season.

“I think it’s one of those records that you never expect to be beaten, so it’s very difficult to find the right words,” said Vettel. “I didn’t really answer the questions the last couple of days because at the end of the day what makes me jump into the car is not a certain number.

IndyCar driver Tony Kanaan showed up at NASCAR’s season finale wearing a red Target hat.

It may have been a show of support.

It also may have been a sign of things to come.

Kanaan, a Miami native, spent time with car owner Chip Ganassi as well as close friend Juan Pablo Montoya at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday. But Kanaan offered no insight into what changes might happen at Target Chip Ganassi Racing in the coming weeks.

Sebastian Vettel climbed out of his Red Bull car, pumped his right first then held up eight fingers, one for each of his consecutive victories.

Formula One’s German dominator just keeps on winning.

The four-time world champion won the U.S. Grand Prix in easy fashion Sunday, setting an F1 season record with his eighth straight victory behind another blistering drive that gave the field no chance to catch him.
