For Juan Pablo Montoya, he’s got “friends in all the right places” and he heard from many of them after his victory in last Sunday’s race at Pocono. The driver from Colombia received lots of congratulatory messages from his former NASCAR Sprint Cup competitors including three-time champion Tony Stewart.

“Stewart sent me a Facebook message that was kind of funny,” Montoya said proudly Friday at Iowa Speedway as he prepares for Saturday night’s Iowa Corn Indy 300.

Godzilla is getting soft.

Not the movie monster — although its latest iteration has been criticized for putting on a little weight — but the Nissan GT-R, which has been likened to the famous daikaiju thanks to its nuclear levels of performance.

The numbers speak for themselves: Zero to 60 mph in under three seconds; a top speed of 196 mph; 545 horsepower courtesy of a hand-built 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 assembled in a clean room so high-tech that those fleeing scientists on the silver screen would kill to have one. If only they’d made it.

Marc Marquez notched a new best pole lap in the MotoGP Q2 session at the German Grand Prix, with Dani Pedrosa and Stefan Bradl also on the front row – Pedrosa setting a fast lap before a crash.

A 1:20.937 effort from Marquez gave him pole by just under 0.3s from Repsol Honda colleague Pedrosa who went down at Turn 1 with three minutes remaining. The rapid lap time for Marquez broke Casey Stoner’s six-year old best pole lap record of 1:21.067 from 2008.

The home fans were delighted with Bradl registering a 1:21.340 lap, as the German qualified third having initially been on provisional pole five minutes into the session.
