Two-time premier class World Champion Jorge Lorenzo reduced the leading lap time as the Phillip Island tire test continued on Tuesday. The Yamaha Factory Racing rider headed Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso, while Tito Rabat set a blistering place in Moto2.

This week’s three-day test follows the Australian Grand Prix of 2013, at which both Bridgestone and Dunlop were caught out by the greater average speeds on the new Phillip Island track surface and for this reason are conducting the test to avoid a repeat of such tIre issues later this season.

Dani Pedrosa racked up 88 laps as the three-day Phillip Island tire test began on Monday. The sole Repsol Honda Team rider present, the three-time premier class championship runner-up completed more laps than any other rider present.

Following the tire-related problems of the 2013 Australian Grand Prix, this week’s test features new tires from both Bridgestone (MotoGP) and Dunlop (Moto2). In Pedrosa’s case, the Spaniard started Monday on last year’s tires in order to compare them with the 2014 bike, before conducting short runs (each of a minimum of six laps) as research started with the new experimental tires.

Cal Crutchlow experienced several frightening moments as Phillip Island tire testing began on Monday, but insists that these are helping both himself and Bridgestone as the Japanese tire company looks to continue develop.

The point of this week’s test in Australia is to develop tires that are able to cope with a full race distance, unlike those of last year which were unable to cope with the higher average speeds on a new track surface. On Monday, Crutchlow was second quickest to Jorge Lorenzo as the three-day test commenced.
