One of the tasks during last week’s MotoGP test in Malaysia was to sample the new tires supplied by Bridgestone ahead of the 2014 season. Antonio Jimenez, crew chief to GO&FUN Honda Gresini’s Alvaro Bautista, explains the challenge.

Bautista may have ended proceedings 11th on the timesheet, but rapid lap times were not everything as numerous experiments went on behind the scenes.

The metropolitan streets are deserted and dimly lit in the wee hours of the morning. Simon Pagenaud unlocks a warehouse door and opens an envelope that contains his classified mission: evaluate the 2015 Acura TLX prototype.

“It’s real James Bond stuff,” Pagenaud said of his role in a TV commercial he filmed in Los Angeles late last year.

The star is the car, but the IndyCar Series driver, who enters his third full season with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports is pleased with his supporting role.

Gerard Lopez, the Lotus team owner, has played down suggestions the Enstone squad is still grappling with financial problems.

The team’s problems of late last year, when Kimi Raikkonen went unpaid and crucial negotiations with the Quantum group faltered, are well-known.

But Lopez said that the decision not to test the new car at Jerez recently is not because Lotus had no money.

While the first IndyCar race of the year is still over a month away, teams are hard at work preparing for the season. On Monday, a handful of teams headed to Fontana, Calif. to test Auto Club Speedway.

MotoGP: Ducati Still Pondering Switch To ‘Open’ Spec Bikes

One of the significant topics of discussion during MotoGP testing last week was whether or not Ducati will be switching all of its premier class bikes to Open specification for the upcoming 2014 campaign.

The label ‘Open’ is new this year and is given to those bikes running the spec ECU software (as provided by Dorna Sports and Magneti Marelli) as well as the ECU hardware, which from this season onwards is compulsory for all bikes in the field.
