Fernando Alonso managed to turn seventh on the grid into second at the checkered flag after a vintage performance by the Spaniard in Singapore.

He jumped up to third at the start and then gambled by pitting under a safety car on lap 25 while Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg up ahead chose to stay out, as did Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton. He dropped to fifth but managed to keep his tires in good shape and get to the flag. When the others pitted only Vettel was able to stay ahead, leaving Alonso in second.

With Lotus team mate Kimi Raikkonen hampered by a back injury Romain Grosjean stepped up to take third on the grid in Singapore.

Grosjean was one of only three drivers to have the confidence to gamble on using only supersoft tires to progress from Q1, along with Vettel and Webber. He was only 0.217s off pole man Vettel in Q3, although he also lost out to Nico Rosberg.

Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel claimed pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix, besting his fading championship rivals Saturday despite gambling on skipping the last flying lap of qualifying.

Already boasting a big lead in the Formula One drivers’ championship standings, Vettel sat out the last section of qualifying under the lights at Marina Bay in order to save a set of the super soft tires for the race.

The Formula One championship leader had the fastest time on Friday as well but was pushed harder this time, and his best lap was only two-tenths of a second better than that of Lotus’ Romain Grosjean.
