The huge yellow sea of Valentino Rossi fans were excited to see ‘The Doctor’ back on the Mugello podium, as he claimed third position at the Grand Prix of Italy.

Sunday also saw Rossi become the second rider to compete in 300 Grand Prix races, joining fellow Italian Loris Capirossi as a triple centurian.

An intriguing duel between Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo saw the former come out on top at Mugello, with Valentino Rossi joining them on the podium.

The two Spaniards put on a great show in front of the Italian crowd, battling for the lead for several laps, only for Marquez to clinch a sixth successive victory in 2014 by 0.121s on the final lap.

As the premier class action on the opening day of the 2014 Gran Premio d’Italia TIM concluded at Mugello, light rain restricted the riders’ activity – with Marc Marquez fastest on Friday courtesy of his FP1 best time.

Some late timed laps in FP2 for the MotoGP riders saw Ducati Team’s test rider and wild card this weekend Michele Pirro top with a 2:05.435 in the mixed conditions, with only Nicky Hayden (Drive M7 Aspar), Alvaro Bautista (GO&FUN Honda Gresini) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Drive M7 Aspar) joining him on a relatively meaningless afternoon timesheet.

Video: MotoGP Le Mans podium all crashed in Mugello last year

The Italian Grand Prix at Mugello marks an important weekend for all three Le Mans podium finishers: Marc Marquez (1st), Valentino Rossi (2nd) and Alvaro Bautista (3rd).

Mugello remains one of two circuits Marquez does not have a podium on and serves as the home race for nine-time champion Valentino Rossi, who crashed out in a collision with Bautista at this circuit last year.

Sunday’s sixth round of the 2014 MotoGP season will see nine-time champion Valentino Rossi make his 300th Grand Prix start in the 838th official MotoGP race … meaning that the Doctor will have started in 35.8 percent of all Grand Prix events, reports Gregory Haines.

Meanwhile, Marc Marquez, who has won all five MotoGP races in 2014, admits that Mugello will be a challenge for him after suffering multiple crashes on this circuit last year.
