The Red Bull Air Race World Championship will be back in the skies beginning in February 2014 with a seven-race World Championship staged in six countries on three continents. Of the seven races, two will take place in the U.S. – Dallas/Fort Worth at Texas Motor Speedway on Sept. 6-7 and Las Vegas at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Oct. 11-12.
The world’s fastest motorsport will be back with three former World Champions in the 12-pilot field after taking a three-year break to improve safety and reorganize. Created in 2003, Red Bull Air Race has been watched by millions of fans at 50 races, with the competitors racing in high-performance airplanes between 50 and 80 feet above the ground and navigating a challenging obstacle course of Air Gate pylons at speeds of up to 230 mph. Fans will be able to watch the entire seven-race 2014 Red Bull Air Race World Championship on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2.
A fan watching Sunday’s IndyCar Houston Grand Prix captured the moment of impact from Dario Franchitti’s scary wreck on the final lap in dramatic fashion.
Obtained exclusively by Houston’s KPRC Local 2, the cell phone video shows the speed and intensity on the incident where Franchitti’s car launched into the fencing after making contact with Takuma Sato.
Franchitti suffered two fractured vertebrae, a fractured ankle and a concussion in the incident, while 13 fans were treated for minor injuries, two of which were transported to a local hospital.
After making the rounds on the Internet, the video caused IndyCar driver JR Hildebrand to question how cars continue to get airborne.
Dario Franchitti has been diagnosed with a spinal fracture that will not require surgery, a fracture to the right ankle and a concussion after being involved in a serious crash during Race 2 of the Houston Grand Prix.
Franchitti was battling with Takuma Sato on the final lap when they collided, sending Franchitti airborne and into the catch fence in Turn 5. EJ Viso, who was also involved, managed to miss Franchitti’s destroyed car, but T-boned Sato.
